Advantages: inexpensive, variety of flavours

Disadvantages: not all flavours available in multipacks

Since adopting our Siberian Husky, Casey, 3 years ago, he was very starved and underweight when we first brought him home, and so ate anything that we fed him as if he was just glad of a bowlful of food, but as time went on he was starting to go off his food more. We had him checked out, but nothing seemed to be wrong with him health wise, so just put it down to being a fussy eater. He did get used to getting a lot of leftovers from our meals and meat from a Sunday lunch though, obviously not a very good diet, but those eyes .....................

However, whilst browsing the pet aisle in Asda, I got my eye on Asda's own brand of dog food - Hero pate. The single foil trays at the time were only 26p for the 150g size and 34p for the 300g, and were available in a range of flavours. The price was very reasonable, 26p/34p was not a lot of money if he didn't like it, and if he did, great.

I chose a random selection of flavours in both sizes, just as a trial, and if he did not like them, my mum's dogs would eat them, so I was not losing out completely.

Casey's feeding time came along that night, so I opened 3 trays, chopped up 2 and a half of them and put his bowl in front of him. I was surprised by the smell and look of the meat, it was actually quite meaty and appealing. Anyway, in the time that it took me to put the empty trays in the bin and the opened one in the fridge, he had cleared the bowl. The following morning I gave him another 2 and the remaining half from the night before, and lo and behold the bowl once again was empty. Feeling quite smug, I went back to Asda and bought 2 multipacks of the trays, which are £2.98 for 12 x 150g and have not looked back. We still feed him with other brands, which he eats to make sure he has plenty of variety with his food, but Hero stands to be a firm favourite.

With him being a large dog, we have to feed him between 2 and 2.5 trays for each meal, which is equivalent to a 400g tin, but for the price of it I wont grumble. Unfortunately for us, we have to buy the smaller trays as he prefers the flavours (he didn't take quite well to the flavours in the larger sizes) and one of the flavours that he seems to eat the most is not in the multipack either so we have to buy those separately too.

The flavours:

Rabbit and Kidney 150g (not available in multipack)
Duck and Liver 150g (available in single and multipack)
Beef and Turkey 150g (multipack)
Chicken and Ham 150g and 300g (single and multipack)
Chicken and Turkey 150g (multipack)
Beef and Spring Vegetables 300g (not available in multipack)

I think there may be more flavours but cant think of them off the top of my head. The ones I have listed here are the ones that I have in my stock of food at the moment. Asda hero is also available in 400g tins, although I have not personally purchased these for my dogs

Overall, I would recommend, although I cannot speak for the dogs, but this is great if you are on a budget or even if you want to try something new for your dog without spending a fortune on things that s/he may not eat.

If only dogs could talk ....................................

Thanks for taking the time to read my review.

I have also posted on ciao.

Huskies are indeed beautiful but renowned for having delicate tums. A dry complete diet is definitely best although I do understand the better ones are simply too expensive for some people
