Advantages: The dog liked it
Disadvantages: Not nutritionally sound
I love my dogs. I try and make sure they have the best things I can afford so they are in the absolute best condition they can be. Naturally, reading this makes you wonder why I would choose a wet food by 'Hero' - Asda's own brand. The honest answer is I wouldn't given the choice but I took in a rescue case that had been eating Asda Hero tins and it would almost certainly upset her tum to swap suddenly to my normal JWB.
So I go to Asda and purchase the offending items. The tins are 32p each or £1.88 for a multipack of 6 asorted flavours. This is a very cheap price so is it not reasonable to expect that the quality of the ingredients is reflected in this? There is a reasonable range of flavours including Beef and Game and Chicken & rice in singles and 3 different flavours in multipacks.
Personally, I am against feeding tinned foods. They are mostly moisture and this causes multiple problems. The stools aren't as firm as they would be on dried food so the anal glands don't empty by themselves leaving you with a dirty job on you hands or a trip to the vets. Secondly, a wet food coats your dog's teeth causing dental problems which is an expensive business!
Back to Hero tinned food. I opened this tin to feed my newly adopted charge. It was a chicken & rice flavour. Upon opening it I was quite shocked. It appeared extremely orange and I could see bloated stands of rice floating in this 'sauce'. There was little sign of any meat so I suspect the food is more cheap filler than anything of substance. It's things like that which cause intollerances in dogs so should be avoided if possible. The colouring was also obviously achieved by additives which, again, I llike to avoid.
When it came down to the taste test, the dog didn't complain at all and the food was eaten straight away. I mixed in JWB kibble to start the transition onto that diet and the whole mixture was hoovered up in record time. Still, I wouldn't keep a dog on this food.
Summary: I may be biased but I wouldn't feed it
