Disadvantages: It doesn't work
Bob Martin Cat Spot On:
We got this product as part of our ongoing battle against poor Tifa's fleas. She hates them, they make her itch and generally drive her crazy. We hate them too, nasty little hoppy, biting pests! They also appear to immortal! We have been fighting the good fight for over two months now and the things just won't go away.
The "spot on" type treatment is familiar to many pet owners. You get a tiny little bottle of the product which you open and then squeeze the contents on to the back of the neck. It sounds simple and for the most part it is.
The Bob Martin Spot On product has an immediate flaw. You have to snip the top off of the bottle instead of it having a "bend and break" type arrangement like some of the other spot on products on the market. This may sound like a small problem but this is insecticide we are dealing with, not a great thing to spill all over the place when you are trying to cut through plastic with your more-than-likely-to-be-blunt kitchen scissors! The addition of a snap off top would be a great improvement to this product.
Now for putting in on the cat; with ninja like stealth I sneaked over to where Tifa was sleeping, oblivious to the imminent danger of the flea treatment. Catching her sleeping was important because she is fast and once she realises what I am up to she's off like a shot. Luckily I managed to catch her asleep and managed to part the fur on the nape of her neck before squeezing about half the product on. It was at this point the fun started! She managed to wriggle free and escape. After a game of cat and mouse I managed to grab her and quickly finish the procedure! It was actually relatively easy, most of the drama was because Tifa is a naughty, (very cute but very naughty), kitten.
Right that should be it for four weeks, no more fleas, she had been treated with a flea spray to kill the current fleas and this *should* keep them at bay. I say should because it doesn't. Within a week Tifa has fleas again, (God knows where they are coming from, we have treated the whole house twice, the cat twice and she doesn't go outside), hopping around and generally getting on my nerves and Tifa's too.
I wish I could recommend this product, it is made in Yatton in North Somerset which is a mere mile and a half from where I grew up but it is rubbish. It does absolutely nothing as far as I can tell except for annoying Tifa and costing me nearly £2.00. Okay £2.00 isn't much but is for something that just doesn't work. We have used it twice, (to give it a fair go), but it hasn't worked either time!
There are plenty of warnings on the packet, (keep away from leather, or polished surfaces, don't touch your cat until it is dry, not for use by pregnant women etc), as like I said earlier it is a pesticide and needs to be treated with care.
The other half picked this up in Sainsbury's for £1.97 but we will never be buying it again, it is awful!
Summary: A product that doesn't do what it says on the tin

- 06/06/09 Oh sorry, forgot to mention the name of the actual flea product. It is called stronghold. But I've heard that Frontline is pretty good too. |

- 06/06/09 I applaud you for doing this on your own - you must have really great stealth if you can catch her before she realises. My husband tried this on his previous cats, and yes, it is really rubbish but it is also really cheap. We actually give Jazz a prescription based flea treatment. It not only kills fleas but it kills any other parasites (i.e. worms) he may have - therefore no need for worming tablets. It works by staying in the cat's blood system for a month and when anything bites him, it dies. It is REALLY effective! He will still have the occassional one flea (that's unavoidable) but they die after the initial bite. It's pricey though - £26 for 6 months but it's worth it. |
