Advantages: Absolutely none

Disadvantages: may kill or seriously harm your cat. No warnings about this at all even though its known!

We used this on out 18 month old cat Millie. After a few hours she was salivating and slobbering uncontrollably. We put this down to her having maybe tried to clean some of the product of her and got some in her mouth. The packaging says this will happen if they taste any due to its "bitter taste". After another hour or two out cat could hardly walk, her back legs had no function and she had no control of her bladder. She wet herself a couple of times. We called the Bob Martin careline and they suggested we wash her to get rid of any remaining product. We did this but she still got worse. She was twitching uncontrollably and was very "wired". Her eyes very wide, she looked very spaced out and unaware of her surroundings but was very agitated and highly strung. This was very unusual for her as she is such a placid and easy going cat. We got so concerned we took her straight to the vets. The vets also washed her to to remove any traces of the product and told us that this was not an uncommon occurance after using this product and recommended that we don't use it at all. We took her back home but she was still quite bad and still had very little control over her body. She was still wetting her self and acting very strangely and twitching uncontrollably. Later that evening we decided to keep her in the utility room for her own safety and some peace and quiet. Then there was lots of banging from the room and when I entered the room our poor little Millie was having a bad fit. Having never seen anything like this before it was very upsetting and shocking. She was running into the walls and banging into things and obviously was very very ill. This lasted for about 8 minutes and I was trying my best to calm her. The fit eventually slowed down and she was lying on her left side just twitching and shaking. To be honest as the fit subsided and her breathing and heart rate slowed I thought it would stop completely and she was about to die. It was very upsetting and worrying. As soon as the fit had subsided we took her straight back to the vets and she was sedated and put on a drip. She remained in the vets for 2 days. She was still not back to normal when she came home but she is alive and has regained the use of her legs and her functions. Although she is still twitching occasionally. Hopefully this will subside with time. The vets has stated that the chemicals had attacked her nervous system. Bob Martins is available over the counter as it is not as rigorously tested as other products only available from vets. It also contains chemicals that vets do not recommend to be used on cats. Since this I have been researching into this product and found many many pet owners with similar accounts, some not as bad as the reaction we had but also some much worse where the cat had eventually died. This product is dangerous and should not be used at all. It may not effect all cats, but it is not worth taking the risk with yours. There are no warnings on the packet at all stating that some cats may be effected int his way. But this is not an isolated incident. The vets have had other cases and their other cases listed on the internet. Do not use this and risk the health of your cat. You may get lucky and your cat may not be effected, but its a lottery and this product should not be on sale.

Summary: DO NOT RISK YOUR PET BY USING THIS PRODUCT!

Please could you contact me asap. My cat shadow died a horrific death yesterday within hours of applying this product (even though we had used it a number of times before). It would seem from what you say, that Bob Martins are aware of the problems (but obviously they did not share that with me on the phone yesterday!). I am so angry and feel so guilty for having applied it to him. Please could you update me on what the British Vetinary Directorate have to say. I have contacted watchdog. Many thanks.

Well, Millie is getting better!

She stopped having fits about 5 days ago, which is great news. She is still slobbering sometimes, maybe 2 or 3 times a day, but this seems to be decreasing now as well.

She is not her normal friendly self yet, but bearing in mind what she has been through lately thats not suprising. Hopefully when she is completely better she will not be so grumpy and out happy friendly cat will be back. Its just a relief that she did not die and is definately getting much better every day.

Bob Martin have also sent us a cheque to cover for the vets bills which is also good news as it was getting very expensive. I do still think that they should seriously consider putting a warning on the packaging though, and will be persuing this further.

The British veterinary Directorate have got the vial of solution and are conducting some tests on it - even though this product is not licensed by them they seem very interested in what has happened and are looking into it all in detail. They also have the blood tests that the vet carried out on Millie and have been very helpful.

I am still suprised by the number of people who have had similar experiences with their cats, some fatal and some not so bad as the reaction Millie had. But this is obvioulsy happened many times and has been known about for a number of years, which I think is scandalous.

I have heard that Bob Martin are in the process of changing this product and selling a new version/updated version, or maybe a different product altogether. Which is good news, as long as the newer one is safer.

Will post an update when I hear more back from the veterinary directorate people.

What an experience. Indicative of the fact that warnings should be put on products x
