Advantages: NONE, NONE , NONE
Disadvantages: Can be fatal for your cat and dog, No warnings
This is quite distressing writing this review but if it helps to save another cat or dogs life, then it will be more than worth it. Last Thursday I treated the elder of our three cats Thomiss with Bob Martin Spot On for cats as she was scratching alot around her neck. I treated her in early evening. At about 10pm that evening I noticed she was very subdued and was just lying there. I thought that perhaps she had licked some of the Bob Martin Spot On and I just left her to rest. Later that night at about 1am, I noticed Thomiss couldnt walk properly and was over exagerating her steps with her back legs. Her pupils were large and she was lashing out at things that werent there. She was frothing at the mouth. We stayed with her until she became alittle more settled. Then about 2am, I was lying in bed and I heard her walking about again and got up to see what she was doing. She had tried to jump up on a box but wasn't able to, due to the lack of movement in her legs. She headed towards the stairs and was spitting and lashing out. Next thing she had fallen down the stair and was desperatley trying to get outside. We dont let our cats out at night and I am glad becasue goodness knows where she wouldve went to. She lay under the couch in the sitting room and continued spitting and was very frightened. We rushed her immediately at 2.30am to the vet. I explained that I had treated her earlier in the day with Bob Martin Spot On. Straight away he knew what the problem was. He said the ingredient in Bob Martin Spot On and other similar flea remedies are desgined to attack the nerves in the flea and that it can also at time attack the cats nerves. There and then he gave our beloved Thomiss 4 injections and kept her in his surgery. We phoned him the next morning Friday. He informed us that Thomiss had got alittle worse and that he had given her more injections and had to give her something to calm her down. She was also on fluids. He said that because of the sev
erity of the reaction, it could take 3-4 days with intense treatment for our precious girl Thomiss to get back to her normal self. We rang him again at 4pm on Friday and he said that about an hour earlier, Thomiss had another seizure and he had to give her something to calm her down. He said we could look at it two ways - that either she was getting worse or that she was now over the worst of it. The vet felt that we could be positive. We agreed to ring back in the morning (Sat 27/03/04),thats to-day. We said we would ring at 9.30am. At 9am the telephone rang and it was the vet to tell us that our little girl Thomiss had passed away within the last hour. Thomiss was 14years old. Age was not a factor in her losing her life. She was an extremely fit and healthy cat. Thomiss kept our two younger cats Pepsi and Maxi on their toes. At present I am feeling very guilty for treating her for fleas. If only I could turn back the clock. It seems so unfair that her life has been taken from her and in some ways I feel responsible. I feel very angry that this product is on sale and widely available for use on our cats and dogs. There is absolutely no warning with it. When Thomiss was in the care of the vet, I was frantically searching on the internet to see what I could find relating to the Bob Martin Spot On product and the ingredients cotained in it.The reading was very disturbing. I would advise, after you read this to search the internet and look up PERMETHRIN and its association with cats and dogs. I guarantee it will change your perspective on what you will use on your pets in the future. My vet reccommended a product called ADVANTAGE. He said it is ten times more effective in killing fleas and it is pet friendly. The scary thing about all this is that we have previously used Bob Martin Spot On with our three cats and our dog but it had no effect until now. We are moving home in a couple of weeks and we were so much looking forward to having ou
r three cats with us and were planning all sorts. Please pass on this story to any of your friends or family who are pet owners. We just hope Thomiss's story can help save your pets life. We hope it will make owners more aware of what is contained in products. Thomiss will live on with us forever. We miss her so dearly and all her little ways. xxxx

- 17/07/07 Stormcommand - There are two types of spot on treatment by Bob Martins - one for DOGS and one for CATS. Yes, the dog treatment is for DOGS and is poisnous to cats. HOWEVER, the one specifically for cats should be safe (it is designed for cats and contains no permetherin)...unfortunat ely it can still kill cats. Bob Martins did fur sample tests on my cat to check that I had applied the right spot-on treatment, I had, but my cat still died. |

- 19/05/07 All these reviews and comments have one thing in common. They are all for cats.
If you read the packaging on the spot on treatment you will notice the warning that it is not for use with cats. It contains permithrin which is poisonous to cats and states it quite plainly on the packet. |

- 05/04/07 My cat also died within hours of applying this treatment. It was horrific. (see my review posted on the 3rd April 2007). I hope all of the reviews listed here will help others make a more informed decision about using this product. Bob Martin's Spot On contains no warnings about the possible serious side effects, even though they are well aware of some awful cases. |
