Advantages: Clean, easy to use, No artificial colours, flavouring or preservative, for optimum health in your pe
Disadvantages: More expensive than commercial food, not available at supermarkets
I discovered this food after looking at the website www.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk and thought I would try some from our local stockist where we now buy our Burns dog food for my son & daughters Border Collies. We had seen such an improvement in the 2 dogs that I felt I wanted to write a review to share our positive experience of this product.
Brief History
John Burns himself is a Veterinary Surgeon and the food is based on a homemade recipe which he was advising his clients to use as he felt there simply wasn't the quality and type of ingredients being put into commercial pet food.
He recommended his clients to stop feeding commercial food but feed brown rice, vegetables and chicken and fish or meat that was fit for human consumption. Although a number of his clients followed his recommendation and achieved remarkable results in the health of their pets many clients found the preparation of their animal's food too daunting and time consuming. He then decided that if pet health was to be managed through diet the food would need to be readily available and convenient for all.
Robert Burns takes a very holistic approach to the health of all pets as the food he developed will help naturally maintain a healthy immune system, coat and skin, digestive tract, skeletal, respiratory and nervous systems simply because it. The food is simple food which is why it's called "Burns Real Food". There are no chemical additives such as artificial colours, flavourings or preservatives.
The Packaging.
This variety of Burns food comes in an orangey coloured bag/sack with the head and shoulders of a dog on the front. There is lots of additional information on the bag/sack. Including a feeding guide for dogs according to their weight and size. I like this food especially in addition to no artificial colours, flavouring and preservatives no battery hen meat is used for the making of this food. (We are now realising artificial colours etc are not good for our kids so why should we give them to our pets?)
The Product Itself.
This is a complete dry food. At the moment I use the Chicken & Brown rice variety for my dogs which they adore. It smells fresh and meaty and the biscuits are about three times the size of a pea. It is recommended to use the food within 3 months of opening the bag.
Ingredients.
Chicken & Brown Rice food contains:
Brown Rice, Poultry Meat Meal, Maize, Poultry Fat, Chicken Liver, Seaweed, Vitamins & Minerals.
Availability and Price
It's a real shame that Burns food is not available everywhere but I can buy this from 2 local stockists and also in nearby towns. You can also buy it direct from "Burns" www.burns-pet-nutrition.co.uk. It is not available at supermarkets.
I pay £37 for a 15-kilo bag.
Burns have a good variety of flavours for you to choose from such as:
FISH & BROWN RICE - For adult dogs of all ages including seniors - ocean fish (not farmed) and from a sustainable source.
CHICKEN & BROWN RICE - For adult dogs of all ages including seniors - no battery hen meat used and all the goodness of brown rice
LAMB & BROWN RICE - For adult dogs of all ages including seniors - NZ lamb, not intensively reared
VENISON & BROWN RICE - For adult dogs of all ages including seniors - NZ venison, not intensively reared
DUCK & BROWN RICE - For adult dogs of all ages including seniors - free range duck meat
PORK & POTATO- A hypo-allergenic diet for the avoidance of food intolerance - no wheat, Soya, rice or chicken
ORGANIC - 95%+ organic ingredients (unlike many so-called organic pet foods)
HIGH OATS - Ideal for overweight dog - - no battery hen meat used
ACTIVE - For the active working dog - - no battery hen meat used
My Opinion.
My dogs have been on this for about 8 months now. They have gained really glossy coats that they did not have before. Their fur is thick and they looks really good and more importantly healthy. One of the dogs was always a bit underweight before but has now put on a few pounds and looks all the better for it. Burns food is certainly not as cheap as the commercial tinned food but you get what you pay for and in my opinion and this is worth every penny. Always make sure there is a bowl of clean fresh water available at all times.
Other Information.
There is a contact telephone number on the bag/sack where if in any doubt or just have questions that are un-answered on the website you can ring and speak to qualified staff. I have personally spoken to them regarding our dogs and they were so helpful. They are also happy to send out free samples and sometimes send you money off vouchers.
Thank you for reading.
Summary: A food that is suitable for dogs with medical conditions, a natural food
