Advantages: Reduces cat mess!

Disadvantages: Everything else - see review

Living at home, our cat Fuzz never had a litter box (except when we moved house and kept her in for a few days) - and I am generally against them in principle because I see no reason for them. If you have an old cat that can't move very well or a young kitten then fair enough, but I think cats in general should be allowed to come and go as they please and not be shut in the house. Iif there are any other reasons for litter boxes on a permnanent basis please feel free to chip in!!

Recently, three cats moved in with me along with my new housemate. They are very cute (except when they bring in mice, which is on a daily basis now), but it meant when they first moved in I had to deal with litter myself. My housemate had gone up north for a few dyas to finish his dissertation and I said I'd look after them. He left about half a big bag litter (I think a supermarket own brand but not value/basics) - but we went through that quicker than I assumed.

So off I trotted to Sainsbury's in the dark and rain one night like the softie I am. I decided to just pick up some Basics cat litter - it wouldn't be for that long and surely there isn't that much difference between brands? Anyway, I was surprised at how cheap it was - for a massive bag (pain to carry home though) it set me back just over £1. However, the bag was cheaply made and several of them had split in the shop, so be careful when buying.

So in terms of price - not bad at all. However, it did generate a lot more household rubbish, smelt horrible (obviously), was a pain to carry through the house (in an effort to get it to the wheelie bin out front) and was generally unpleasant. Definitely put me off my breakfast, since I could smell it very strongly first thing in the morning, and getting rid of it lessened my appetite more!

I have to say that the litter box looked kind of cool though, as it was a fun curved shape and lime green. It had a rim part to take off and make chanigng litter easier.

However, using litter full time would just be a real pain and thankfully the cats don't need it any more. I don't like messing with litter boxes and litter - it costs money, it's pointless in most cases, it generates a lot of extra rubbish and it's just unpleasant.

Summary: Won't deal with it unless I have to

Mew uses his litter tray if the weather is bad but happily goes in our garden when he can so we don;t cause a nuisance for anyone else which is great! Susan

Cats bury their poo, generally in the ground; dogs don't (at least, nowhere near as successfully). Dogs also tend to go in the middle of the street, which is much more annoying for people. It's better for the environment and plants if animal poo is buried in the earth instead of put in a plastic bag and thrown onto landfill with a ton of litter! It is, after all, designed to be biodegradable on its own anyway :)

I'm with Stebiz. Our garden has lawns and hard landscaping, so there's nowhere for them to dig, which means that without a litter tray they'd go on the neighbours' gardens instead. I've given you a VU as well, because you've made your point well, even though I, too, don't agree with it.
