Advantages: Clean white and very odour absorbing
Disadvantages: Expensive
I would like to enlighten you about the merits of Catsan as I have had the joy of caring for a family of Persian cats for many many years. These cats live indoors and so you have to have a litter tray which in my opinion is the only problem with keeping cats within the confines of a home. Having said that because they don't go out we don't have any problems with cat fleas, so I think this is a positive thing since in days gone by we did when our moggies went roaming, but that's a different story!
I have been conducting a year long experiment on the question of whether it is better to buy Catsan or to keep buying cheap value litter from supermarkets. The thing is on the face of it Catsan is expensive. To give you a rough idea here are the prices as of today for Catsan itself from some of the main stores.
Tesco 10litres £4.51
Asda 10 litres £4.58
Sainsbury 10 litres £4.58
Ocado 10 litres £4.53
It is sometimes on special offer if you have a Pets At Home near to you and you can buy it there in a 20 litre bag for £8.69 but be warned this bag is very heavy and you could hurt your back carrying it.
About £4.50 will buy you about 4 bags of the cheaper litter from Asda or Tesco.
So why buy Catsan?
I first saw Catsan advertised on television some time ago after I had been using it for many years. The advert showed a family of white kittens, I think they were British Blues and they were talking in the scenes asking "I don't know where my litter tray is". The cats were immaculate, the litter was pure white and the scene was a blue and white heaven- really really cute! Not reality though in our house when three hungry Persians want their breakfast and you are greeted by last night's litter tray.
So when I saw the cheaper litter I thought right let's try it and we did. Most of the value litters are grey in colour and are less than £1.20. They do the job but they have a major disadvantage in that they are very dusty. If you use them you will have areas around the tray coated in dust-and it travels. I first started to notice this when I thought my wine bottles on a rack nearly looked like they had been in a cellar in Bordeaux for years after only placing them in there a few days before. On a sunny day you could see all the dust particles in the air around the tray and it worries me that we are breathing those in every day.
The litter doesn't look nice it has a dirty grey appearance and really you have to change the entire tray very frequently as removing soiled areas is not easy.
It is very heavy to carry so you will have to carry it more often unless you have home delivery.
Just a point told to me by my daughter who is a vet student. They have been taught at vet school that each cat should have its own litter tray. As cats are very clean it is really important to give them a special area for toileting which is always kept spotless and that in a multi cat household it should be one tray for each cat. It also helps if you have any cat who is prone to have accidents round the house as it is one causes of this if the litter tray is too soiled.
So having tried the cheap litter for a year now I am afraid I am changing back to Catsan. The tray looks nice with the new litter in. Choose yellow or blue trays because they seem to look cleaner than dark colours. The litter is white and dust free. Catsan does not get caught in their paws so much like the cheap value litter does which is also a bonus. When it does travel it is easily hoovered up as it is proper little chunks. The soiled areas are easy to clean with a cat scoop and the house is once more dust free. Cost wise I think it has worked out to be false economy to buy the cheap litter as it is a dust creator and as I have someone in the house who is allergic to dust I think it is not a good option. Catsan is a very good choice. Clean and disinfect the litter tray regularly and I think you will be really pleased with this product.
The litter is made from individual grains of fine chalk and natural quartz sand which soak up fluid like a sponge, to inhibit bacteria formation and absorb odours before they can develop. You really notice a much cleaner smell in the house when you use it.
Catsan also make a clumping litter which is designed to make removal of soiled areas easier but I won't go into that as it is a different product to the one I have tested.
I think the only other really good alternative is the wooden litter but sadly one of my cats thought she could eat it so I have left that comparison for a later date.
If you go to www.catsan.co.uk you can find out all about it and there is a great little film to watch!
In conclusion I would say yes it is more expensive than cheaper cat litter but if you have indoors cats I think you will be very pleased with the quality and performance. I am wondering why I ever tried the cheap litter now as I feel like I've rediscovered an old friend!
Summary: An excellent product in every way.

- 30/10/09 Interesting point about the one-litter-per-cat. I've only ever had one tray for both my cats, so perhaps I'll buy another. Good review, btw! |
