Advantages: Works well, smells fresh, looks clean

Disadvantages: A bit pricey

Since our handsome Mew adopted us last June we have tried many different cat litters for him - clumping, non clumping, brown, white, you name it we've tried it. We did go for the cheapest at first but we haven't really been happy with the quality or the smell that lingers!

Having read a few reviews I decided that the time had come to try Catsan as this was the one that always gets five stars from reviewers. It is more expensive than the ones we had been using but if it was as good as it sounds it would be worth it.

We looked around at prices and were very surprised to find that the best price available at the time was at Pets at Home and strangely enough they are still the cheapest I can find.

The current prices are as follows:

Asda and Tesco 10 litres = £4.40
Asda 20 litres = £8.31
Pets at Home 20 litres = £8.51 or two for £15

To be honest I have just stocked up while it is on offer! I went through cashinco and purchased 8 packs in order to make the total over £50 so that I could have free delivery! So I get the offer on the Catsan, free delivery, cash back on cashinco and points on my MasterCard! Now that can't be bad!

Anyway back to the Catsan!

Catsan is the litter in the bright blue bag with white carry handles on the top. It has a picture of a pure white cat on the front together with the words 'Catsan Hygiene Litter'. I think that the white cat is to make the buyer think that the product is pure and clean for your cat! A bit of subtle marketing methinks!

The other thing that it states on the pack is that this cat litter has 'guaranteed odour prevention' using 'unique mineral granules'. Now this is something that is really important as anyone who has smelled cat pee will tell you! Our cottage has a small sun room about six feet by twelve on the corner of the house and that it now Mew's room. At night he stays in with the cat flap closed and the door between the kitchen and his room locked. You can imagine that on some mornings when I have opened the kitchen door the whiff of cat pee on the cheap litter has been less than appealing!

So does Catsan make the smell any pleasanter? Yes, it really does! The only time I noticed a faint smell - and it was very faint - was just before the litter needed changing.

The litter itself is white so it looks clean and no, the cat pee doesn't turn it yellow! I didn't notice any dust as I poured it into the litter tray either. The pieces of litter are made up of fine chalk and natural quartz sand and they soak up the liquid, help to stop bacteria forming and keep the litter odour free.

Mew is very happy to use the litter so that's the main thing.

The only time there is a smell from this litter is if Mew has done a Mew poo! That's not really a problem as I always remove it straight away.

That reminds me, I must just tell you a funny story on this subject - skip this bit if you are eating or are tickled stomached!

A few mornings ago I came downstairs into the kitchen to give Mew his breakfast and open his cat flap. He sleeps in a box with cushions and towels and he is usually either lying there looking at the door or standing at the door waiting for me to open it. On this occasion he was lying in his box with his head right in the back corner. As soon as I opened the door a little way he shot out of his box and into the kitchen. I couldn't understand his odd behaviour until I opened the door fully and the smell hit me! I don't know what he had caught and eaten the day before but he had done the biggest smelliest poo I had ever seen! That's why he had his nose towards the back of his box and why he raced out of the room as fast as he could! Mind you as soon as I had removed the offending poo (using a nappy bag as usual) and put it in the dustbin the smell disappeared almost straight away - so full credit to the litter.

In conclusion I would say that, despite the fact that this is one of the more expensive cat litters, I shall continue to buy it because it does the job and does it well.

Summary: Great cat litter for Mew!

Ah the joy of cats eh? We use wood based litter and get it wholesale(8 trays to do!) This sounds like a fantastic product. Great review, thank you. Love to Mew.

As much as I worship cats (they are divine to me), their poo leaves everything to be desired.
