Advantages: Cheap and recommended by vets.
Disadvantages: May not be stocked in smaller petshops and some supermarkets.
Finding the right complete to feed my two dogs has led me to explore various different brands and finding a balance between affordability and giving them a healthy diet has led me to Chappie Complete.
After trying a number of different completes and mixers, we tried Chappie as it is a brand other than the extortionate Dr Hills brand that is recommended by vets. The reason we changed from our previous brand is because my dogs are Bulldogs and they have very sensitive skin and eating the wrong kind of diet can cause irritation and make them scratch themselves. Since being on Chappie Complete there skin has cleared up and they are less prone to scratch themselves.
It is also specifically designed to be easily digestible and one of our Bulldogs used to wolf his food down and then gulp down loads of water and bring his food straight back up. This hasn't happened since being on Chappie.
The complete is all the same size and light brown in colour and the chunks are not too big so they are easy for dogs to chew up without making too much mess. This also makes it suitable for smaller dogs who may struggle with larger sized chunks. Chappie is also not too strong smelling so your dogs won't get stinky breath after eating.
Chappie is lower in fat than most dog foods, enriched with vitamins and is made using wholegrain maize and wheat. The nutritional information for Chappie complete is: 20% protein, 7% Oil, 6.5% Ash, 4% fibre and is a good source of Vitamin A, D, E, and Copper. Too high levels of protein in the diet can lead to kidney problems. So having a relatively low level of protein 20% compared to other dog foods, makes Chappie also excellent for dogs prone to these problems e.g. greyhounds.
The ingredients in Chappie are as follows: Cereals (4% wholegrain), vegetable, meat and animal derivatives (4% chicken), oils and fats, minerals. It contains antioxidants BHT and BHA and preservatives in the form of potassium sorbate and orthophosphoric acid. This can be found along with a feeding guide on the side of the packaging so you don't overfeed or underfeed your doggies. The packaging itself is simple and unadulterated with the bottom half depicting a dog enjoying a walk off it's lead and the top half is the classic red background and the Chappie logo. The packaging does not have a re-sealable label so you will need to fold over the top to keep it fresh.
You can buy Chappie complete in a variety of sizes and there are three different recipes; original, with chicken and one for working dogs. For a 15kg sack of 'Original' or 'with Chicken' it will cost you around £15-17 depending on where you shop. Or a smaller 2.5kg bag for around £3. This relatively low price tag and the fact that it is recommended by vets make this complete dog food affordable without compromising on quality.
Summary: An affordable complete that is good for tummies and skin.

- 26/07/09 Thank you. I am always on the look out for new or improved complete food for dogs. I'm sure my collie cross has some whippet in him, so needs a diet that is low in fat and possibly protein. I shall check this one out. |
