Advantages: easy access, easy to clean, spacious, secure for the cat
Disadvantages: just make sure all the clips are locked
My two lads (cats) have city hoppa carriers. I chose this type of carrier because I thought the mostly enclosed sides would provide a feeling of safety for my boys and I was certain I would not be able to get them into a top-loading version of a cat carrier, I can picture the legs rigidly gripping the sides and the stress just thinking about it!
The city hoppa does have a bowl but frankly we've never used it, if mine are in their carriers the last thing they're interested in is eating and drinking. They hate their carriers and know they mean either a trip in the car or both a trip in the car AND a visit to the vets! Pure hell for them!
However, the city hoppa has a distinctive advantage when you reach the vets. If you have cats that are reluctant to come out, put up a fight when you try to get them out or if, like me, you don't like to see your cat scruffed and pulled out of it's carrier the city hoppa has clips all the way around so you just remove the door, unclip the (I believe there's 7 on each of ours) plastic clips and lift the top off. Perfect!
Mine have had injections while still sitting in the bottom half of the city hoppa and then I've just popped the top and door back on, clipped it and we're off! But when you need the cat out of the carrier these are a stressless way to achieve it both for you and your cat.
The sides have slits in them so there's ventilation and the perfect place for inquisitive little felines to spy on the dogs in the waiting room etc! The door clips feel flimsy but are secure, you just have to make sure it's all lined up correctly before turning them to lock it and make sure they click properly.
We have the large size of these as my two are big burly toms and there's plenty of room for them to lay down, turn around and generally make a fuss! One tip when trying to load your reluctant cat into the city hoppa, place it behind them (with the door open of course!) and put your hands over their eyes lightly so they try to back away from your hands and actually just back right into their city hoppa! Works everytime for us.
We've had ours for 14 years and they're both still in good condition, they're easy to wipe down if there's any dirt on them and there's a little slot in the door for a piece of paper with your cat's name so you don't lose your carrier if you leave it at the vets.
The best carrier around.
Summary: Excellent carriers
