Chubes are specially designed for small pets and are available in a range of sizes from teeny tiny ones for hamsters to giant ones for rabbits. They are made out of cardboard and are extremely durable, being a toy as well as a chew. Chubes come in a variety of colours, the outside either being striped or plain and I find that most small animals love them. My 3 guineas love to race through them, they also like to nudge them about, hide in them and chew them. Out of my boys, Rodney is an obsessive chewer, he loves to knaw on things and spends a lot of time happily tearing things to pieces. I put a chube in his cage and surprisingly it lasts over a month, and that is with a very destructive piggy!
Even though they are made out of cardboard, chubes can withstand some peeing and pooping in them without turning to mush. This is great if you have a messy pig though of course if it gets very soiled I would recommend replacing it.
Chubes are a great little toy and also help to keep your pet's teeth down and prevent them from overgrowing, they are cheap and a guinea pig sized chube costs me less than £3 from my local pets at home. That may seem expensive for something made out of cardboard but they do last quite a while and provide your pet with a lot of fun.
I am not very much of a people person, I love animals and my pets are hugely important to me. I have a Pets at Home store just 10 minutes walk away from my house so this is usually my first choice for pet supplies. The Jumbo Chube can be bought from the Pets at Home retail stores or online at www.petsathome.com for the price of £5.29, and it also comes available in smaller sizes with lower prices.
Pets at Home say: "The Jumbo Chube for Small Pets by Critters Choice is a long lasting chewable play tube for small pets.
Made from environmentally friendly vegetable parchment, the Jumbo Chube is more hygienic than plastic tubes, allowing greater ventilation through its porous structure.
The Jumbo Chube can also double up as a nice hideaway for your small pet, offering them a place to escape and rest.
Suitable for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and other furry pets;
I have 2 rabbits and one guinea pig, all of which live within my house in their own special bedroom, and they each have their own cage where I put their food, water, and sleeping areas. This Chube is the Jumbo size and is suited to most small pets including rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. I originally discovered Chubes when I had guinea pigs, and bought the smaller sizes for them to play in, but since becoming a rabbit owner I have bought the larger size Chube so that all of the pets can use it. It is important to keep small pets occupied and get their minds stimulated as although they may not be the brightest of animals, they are very inquisitive and require distractions to keep them from being bored and becoming destructive. This is especially important for my house rabbits as they do tend to start nibbling at the wallpaper or attempting to dig up the carpet if they don't have enough toys to keep them entertained.
The Jumbo Chube is made of a material similar to cardboard, which is actually composed of vegetable matter. It is a large hollow tube with a cylindrical shape. The Chube has a brightly coloured exterior and a plain white interior surface. The Chube is fairly stiff and sturdy, but due to its shape it can be pushed or rolled around easily.
Both my rabbits and my guinea pig seem to enjoy playing with tunnel type toys. The dimensions measure 30 cm x 20.3 cm x 20.3 cm and it is 21 cm across so my guinea pig has loads of space, and the rabbits still have enough room to fit inside. They all enjoy scuttling through the Chube and running in and out of it. It also doubles up as a hide away area that will provide cover for your pets to have some peace and quiet and feel secure if they do not want to be out in the open.
I would hazard a guess that the name Chube comes from the words "chew" and "tube" as this is what my pets seem to like doing! Because the Chube is made from vegetable parchment it is perfectly safe for pets to nibble on, and my pets love to sink their teeth into it! Quite often they will just sit inside the Chube and nibble away at the edges and this seems to keep them occupied. It's essential to have various items for your small pets to nibble on to ensure that their teeth do not over grow and become painful or cause any problems with feeding etc. I feel happy in the knowledge that this is 100% safe for the pets to chew on and they seem to enjoy attacking it!
Because of this the Chubes do suffer a lot of damage. They end up tatty and torn and the pets will not stop nibbling away at it until it has practically been fully devoured. Chubes seem to have a short lifespan with my pets, and will stay in good shape for up to a couple of weeks, until they reduce in size and get smaller and smaller until they are no longer any use as a play tunnel and just turn into a chewy snack.
Chubes are a great idea that works well to keep your pets active and entertained. I particularly like that they are made from a safe, natural material and am happy for my pets to chew away at them. The only down side is that they are a bit pricey for something that eventually just gets bitten to pieces and for this reason I do not replace them every time the old one has been finished with. They are a good fun toy I just wish they lasted a little longer!
