Advantages: Amuse your pussy on the cheap

Disadvantages: Stating the bloody obvious no.16

Y'know, every year my parents insist on buying presents for our cats at Christmas and every year the biggest hit is eaither wrapping paper or a box..or both combined! This years unwanted toys were a ball which is supposed to roll around randomly instead of in a simple straight line and a catnip infused mouse with a bell on its tail. The mouse was chased once, sniffed and walked away from whilst the ball(allegedly scientifically tested and designed to appeal to all cats) scared one because it rattles and bored the other within a couple of minutes. Money well spent as usual... ;o)

Basically, most of these toys are a complete waste of time, sometimes you'll get lucky and find something they are going to like but mostly they'll have no interest in them whatsoever - a fact which seems linked to price - the more expensive, the less interested they are! You are far better off 'making' your own toys and this is something I can't tell you how to do because all cats are different. You'll find what they like just by living with them, but DIY toys are far superior to bought ones.

My current two cats have their own odd little fetishes. Both love screwed up paper, I think this is something which is pretty universal amongst the cat world and both love boxes, again, pretty universal but you'll probably be able to cope more with screwed up paper than a bunch of boxes scattered around the house! On a slightly more odd level, our oldest cat has a fetish for elastic bands, undoing shoelaces and putting things into and out of shoes... The other will sit for hours fishing emery boards out of a glasses case...she doesn't play with them once they are out, but if they're in there, they have to come out(!) and loves dice...which makes most board games an impossibilty in this house! My girlfriend's cat will only play with hairgrips, but goes nuts when she has one and has a fetish for plastic carrier bags which she has to be kept aw
ay from(she eats them too! lol)...

I think cats find their own toys, you can buy them more but generally they won't be interested so you're only wasting your money. Things like shoelaces, ping pong balls, dice, screwed up paper and whatever bizarre little fetish choices they make on their own are far more successful than anything a shop could ever offer.
