Advantages: Kills worms, keeps your pet healthy.
Disadvantages: Absolutely none.
On Sunday, I discovered my little girl had a problem that she's been keeping a secret from me. She was too embarrassed to tell me so it was only when I was cleaning her litter tray that I discovered she had worms. Despite my assurances that an estimated eight out of ten cats in the UK have worms, she has requested that I change her name for privacy. I shall therefore refer to her as Squeaky, an affectionate reference to the sound she makes when trying to meow.
If you have ever witnessed cat worms, it is not a pretty site. After reassuring Squeaky, I promptly decided to take action and so my first port of call was Google. I did consider a hasty trip to the supermarket to buy some Bob Martin dewormer but remembering the smirk on the vet's face when she had fleas despite using Bob Martin flea treatment, I decided to research it first. And so it would seem that there aren't many people who recommend supermarket pet treatments.
The name that did keep appearing though was Drontal. Drontal is unique in that it kills every type of intestinal worm normally found in cats in the UK. It even boasts being the most commonly used dewormer in the UK, being prescribed by vets twice as often as all other wormers put together. I was sold and Squeaky agreed that this seemed like the best option. Since Squaky likes her home comforts and is a house cat, we did some more research to see how she might have got her worms. One of the most common carriers is fleas so we decided to buy some Frontline at the same time.
We found a site on the internet (to be reviewed at a later date!) and while Squeaky took her mind of things by playing with the mouse, I placed the order. Delivery was quick and last night I picked up the package from the Post Office, along with some pate to take Squeaky's mind off the medicine.
Drontal comes in a tablet form and I was quite surprised at how large they were. I tried, unsuccessfully, to break one in half. Fortunately, as Squeaky likes to watch her figure, she would only need to take one tablet. For larger cats, Drontal sell an XL tablet which means you still only have to overcome the hurdle of getting the tablet into your cat once every 3 months.
I rolled the tablet in some pate but this just made it look even more unmanageable and Squeaky did not look impressed. So I removed the pate leaving just the large white pill and in the end we came to a compromise. I sat her on my lap and gave her lots of loves and hugs and then I pulled her head back by the scruff of her neck. Despite doing her best to keep her mouth shut, there was a slight gap through which I managed to push the tablet. A quick swallow and it was gone and Squeaky ran and hid under the bed.
I soon tempted her out with a few treats and after the subsequent horror of the Frontline treatment she retreated back to her spot under the bed. Squeaky was clearly not happy with me and refused to join me in bed last night.
This morning, I woke up and gave her her breakfast but she soon trotted off to the bathroom. I followed her in and was keen to clear up after her this morning (not a task I usually relish). Squeaky did her doings and I examined them for signs of those pesky worms. I was so happy when I saw them but this time they were obviously dead and not wriggling around as they had been previously.
Squeaky is clearly pleased with the results too. She hasn't been able to thank me enough and is taking every opportunity this evening to brush up against me and purr lovingly. I haven't told her yet that she will now be taking the tablets every three months but we'll cross that bridge when we get there!
I do urge anyone with pets to worm them regularly, even if they are kept indoors and don't have access to other animals. If Squeaky managed to get worms then it could happen to your pet and often there are no obvious symptoms until your pet has been infested. Drontal is recommended by vets and me as it will kill all types of worms. It works quickly and is so cheap for the peace of mind it brings. I paid just £1.45 per tablet and each lasts for 3 months. The Drontal website was a great source of information and I particularly like the idea of their reminder service. I've signed up and they will now send me an email and a text message, both free, when her next dose is due. Both Squeaky and I agree that the only worms we want to see in the future are earthworms!
Summary: Don't waste your money on Supermarket products that don't work.
