Advantages: fun
Disadvantages: dangerous
I have a sneaky suspicion that hamster wheels are more for human enjoyment than the pet's. For example, it's a form of exercise (in our mind), but to a hamster is the road that leads nowhere. As gravity takes over, it also becomes the super quick, run fast else you will fall on your head road that goes nowhere.
I wonder what the point is. I think it's supposed to be about exercise, but do we exercise other caged animals? I'm not sure why it's so important, between these and those horrible ball things like on gladiators, to get the hamster out and about!
The best thing about them is the way they stretch your hamster's legs (and the rest of their body if they're unlucky). This gets them super fit and agile and ready to go, which is very important if you are thinking of entering your hamster into the Olympics.
The worst thing is when the hammy climbs on top of the whole thing and the wheel runs backward and squashes them between the outer side of the wheel and the Perspex side of the cage. It took me ten minutes to stop laughing so much before I rescued the poor git!
No, but really, these are quite nice. They are easy to clean because they are plastic, although I would recommend a free-standing one so you can take it out and give it a good wash.
All in all, a great accessory to fight hamster obesity, and one that leads to a whole bunch of laughs too when they go wrong!
Summary: up to you
