Advantages: none yet
Disadvantages: potenially dangerous, unstable, flimsy
When I bought my hamster cage, I naturally chose one that had a hamster wheel as I throught that my lovely little baby hamster would love to play on it. Now I am 3 hamsters on, and I have a fourth lovely little creature and I don;t think that any of my hamsters have ever really used the wheel. I think that manufaturers have started to realise that these wheels aren't used that much as they have started to stop putting them in automatically. Maybe the reason actually is that they are thought of as little dangerous when they are actually attatched onto the side of the cage. However they have never done my hamsters any harm at all so they can't be that bad. As for those wheels that you add to the cage I don't see much point in them. They are flimsy and to be honest look unstable to me. Trust me one your hamster has been messing around with his shavings they will be all over the place and I wouldn't be happy putting a little wire stand in. Whenever my hamsters have used their wheels it has been infrequently, personally I don't see the point in them, if you have a hamster then you have to get it out and play with it, that is the point in having a rodent rather than a cat or dog. It will do enough running in the early evening and gets bored of going in one of two directions and not getting anywhere. Hamsters are like other animals in that they need routine but they also need to be excited about exercise. If you want a happy healthy hamster buy a ball so they can run around the floor instead.

- 18/05/06 What do you do for in cage-entertainment? I've heard those balls can cause heartattacks if left inside for more than 15 mins |
