My first doggy-based review :)

First I'll introduce to my puppy Hazel, she's a rescue dog aged somewhere between 6 and 9 months. A cross between a staffie and a greyhound; she's beautiful.

Being a puppy she wants to chew everything in sight, her favourites being feet, hands and my settee! My dad bought her this chew as it was huge and he knew it would keep her busy for a good hour or two.

We have also tried the Wilkinsons rawhide chews which are narrower in circumference but she gets through them very quickly now, in about 30 mins. I brought out this Hi Life rawhide chew today as she was whining and wandering about looking for something to chew; she'd already been on a 2 mile walk in the hopes of tiring her out a bit!

What is rawhide?
--------------------------
Rawhide dogchews are made from dried hypodermic interstitial tissue (the second layer of the skin) from cattle raised for meat production. This hypodermic interstitial tissue is very tough and solid.
This layer of tissue is then cut and folded/rolled into the desired shape and dried out in a hot oven.

Info from farmfood.co.uk:
"The saliva, produced while chewing, makes the Rawhide softer and softer. Before it becomes so soft that small pieces can be bitten off, there has been intensive, grating contact between the Rawhide and your dog's teeth. This way it functions as an effective, appetising toothbrush"

So it's good for tartar build-up and gum disease aswell as the survival of your furniture and shoes!

The Hi Life retriever roll
--------------------------------------
The chew comes in plastic wrapping with a gold sticky label giving the details; 'Pets Pantry from Hi Life Retriever roll' I'm told these chews are a complementary dog food for adult dogs, not to be given to dogs under 6 months.
Ingredients: 100% rawhide.
They are produced by Town and country petfoods, Melton Mowbray.

This rawhide is white in colour; the others I've tried are more tan coloured. It is about 8 inches long, an inch and a half wide and an inch deep.
If you look from the end it looks like a tightly rolled swiss roll, the rawhide starts as a sheet and they roll it very tightly while soft so it takes the doggy longer to destroy.

It feels lighter in weight than the smaller Wilkinsons rawhides but it took Hazel much longer to eat and kept her occupied for 3 hours (peace at last).

We have laminate floors and had a rug (before she destroyed it) so as she lays down to hold it between her paws it slips about so I put her fleece blanket out of her basket on the floor and she seems to know why I've done it and rests her front feet and the rawhide on it for the duration of the chewing!
It does get sticky and soggy when your dog is sucking and chewing it so don't let them eat it on your favourite rug or anything else you don't want getting sticky!

You can feed these to your dog as often as required, I give Hazel a couple a week but they are highly digestible and contain nothing but rawhide so it would be ok to feed one daily.

You can buy this rawhide retriever roll online at many pet shops for around £1.69, my dad got mine at Home Bargains for 89p so much cheaper!
If you don't have a Home Bargains anywhere near have a look online at:

There are different sizes available in bone shapes, knots etc too from HiLife.

I'm going to be stocking up on these next time I'm in town, they last longer than any other and I can actually get something done while she's eating lol.

Summary: A great rawhide chew that lasts forever!
