Advantages: Made my moggy (and me) happy
Disadvantages: She wants more
My cat was on probation. We had a house full of cat poop and a very miserable moggy. Sooty had always had a bit of a botty problem but now we were faced with the daily trauma of the sight and smell of feline deposits all over our home. Every time she had a fright we knew to hold her over the toilet (ours – there was never time to get her outside) because her back end would start squirting, her problems were getting steadily worse and smellier.
Eventually, after many expensive consultations, the vet diagnosed a digestive disorder and said that she may have an intolerance to red meat.
We decided to try Iams as we’d seen the adverts. We thought we would try Sooty with it for the recommended three weeks to see if it would make a difference. We honestly thought we were going to have to get rid of her, as we couldn’t physically and mentally put up with piles of poo everywhere, not with two children to think about too. As Sooty is a rescue cat and had actually been rehomed twice before coming to us, I didn’t want to have to put her through that trauma again and the only other option was to have her put to sleep. So we had our fingers and, in Sooty's case, paws crossed.
We gave Sooty her first meal of Iams along with the recommended bowl of fresh water and watched while she stalked off with her tail and nose in the air. I didn’t blame her it did not look particularly appealing and didn’t have the usual wet meat smell associated with cat foods. It was dry and looked like little pink rocks. But she did go back and ate it all and drank all the water, and then asked for more.
Within a week we had a new cat. No we hadn’t gotten rid of Sooty, she was transformed. Instead of our bedraggled, mangy, unhappy moggy, we were now the proud owners of a sleek, alert, kittenish cat. And guess what? No more poops. We also noticed that her breath did not smell as if she had been eating rotting corpses, and she doesn’t fart anymore (maybe I should feed it to hubby).
We had worried in case she wasn’t getting enough to eat, as it seemed such a small amount (a handful), to feed her properly. According to Iams this cat food provides all the essential nutrients to maintain a healthy heart and body, and works out at less than 15p a meal. There are various flavours such as chicken, lamb, fish, a hairball range and also products for kittens and seniors. I find that she clears her bowl and seems satisfied; in fact she doesn’t try to greed our food anymore.
I did worry about the long-term effects of what I saw as a limited diet, but a year on its as if she’s had a new lease of life. We give her a daily treat of tuna and occasionally cheese (she likes wensleydale with cranberries) and that seems to be enough for her. Visitors don’t recognise her, they are sure we’ve traded her in for a younger cat, she is about 9 but you’d think she was much younger. It’s as if she is making up for lost time with her antics, she has a vendetta against pens and regularly stalks any unsuspecting biro and throws it in the air.
Recently our vet asked how she was managing on her crunchy cat food as she has no teeth, but she seems to have no problems sucking her way through her bowls of food.
I have heard that the anti-vivisection lobby are up in arms against Iams, saying they are sponsoring horrific experimentation against animals in order to develop their foodstuffs. But to be perfectly honest and maybe a bit selfish, I have to look after my own interests and find this cat food saved my cats life so I will continue with it.
Summary: Lifesaving cat food

- 14/07/06 Have you tried Dr Hill's Science Diet, Susan? It seems to suit our cats better than IAMS. |

- 11/07/06 Heeeee! I laughed like a drain when I got to the last bit! I know I shouldn't laugh, but the idea of Sooty sucking her food 'cos she has no teeth tickled my warped sense of humour. No wonder she doesn't want anything to eat after sucking her way through her food - she's exhausted! Oh, well maybe not, seeing as she's gone all kittenish again. Maybe the pen thing is because SHE wanted to write the review?! Lou x |

- 11/07/06 Poor Sooty. Glad she's better now. My cats won't touch this though, which is strange because they love all other types of dried cat food. Melony |
