As much as I love my dog Sheba, there are times when she absolutely stinks. Its not that she doesn't wash herself, in fact she pays a great deal of attention to her coat and it shines beautifully. But at the end of the day she is a dog and likes to get up to doggy deeds, like rolling in sheep poop and other such filthy delights and racing about getting hot and sweaty in general. So from time to time she has to have a bath. She doesn't really enjoy having one, it's not half as fun as playing with the hosepipe after all, or having a swim in the river or sea but she does tolerate it well. I get a few dirty looks afterwards but it's definitely worth it for the end result. So we use this shampoo on Sheba for several reasons, but the main one is because it is a tick and flea repellent. Where we live at the moment, we have sheep in the field next door to us and they pass by the garden several times a day in search of fresh things to munch (usually my flowers) and where there are sheep, there are ticks. So we have to guard against these horrible little beasties that like to lurk in the long grass ready to pounce on to the dog wherever they can. (The ticks not the sheep) They are so vile and disgusting and horrible to get out, if you find one on your dog make sure you get all of it off or it will become infected, sometimes the legs or the head will stick into the skin so if you do encounter this problem at all, take your pet to the vet and they will remove it all safely for you. I don't know how much they charge for the privilege though. Like fleas, ticks suck your dogs' blood and don't drop off until they're full, except they are much bigger than fleas so you can imagine that they can be pretty uncomfortable for your pet if they get a grip. A friend of mine says that if you smother the tick with Vaseline it will suffocate and drop off, as it breathes through its back apparently. I don't fanc
y having greasy ticks dropping into the carpet though, thank you very much! I hope that helps you to understand why I favour the prevention method rather than the cure! Using this shampoo has been very successful in preventing Sheba from getting them; in fact, she has only had one tick this summer. I dread too think how many she would have attracted had she not had this protection. So far as I know she doesn't seem to have fleas either, there's a not bare patch to be seen in her coat and she isn't constantly scratching. So I feel very confident that she hasn't got them. So she's been well protected from infestations for about seven years now, pretty impressive I think you'll agree. You can also get this shampoo for repelling fleas only, we buy both, using the tick and flea one in the summer months when ticks are about and the flea one for the winter just in case. There's only about 50p difference in the price. Sheba gets treated with these shampoos about four times a year to be on the safe side. The fragrance has a lovely citrus smell, like lemons if you are using tick and flee repellent and like oranges if you are using the one that repels fleas only. They both leave her coat absolutely silky and shining. What I have noticed is the effect is very long lasting. For instance, if she goes for a swim in the river or the sea, or just a long walk in the rain, you can smell the shampoo on her like she's just had a bath. Ingredients The pack assures you that there are no insecticides used in the shampoo except safe citrus insect repellents. They only include D -limonene and citronella oil on the ingredient list though. The bottle size is 110ml and for my Doberman Pinscher that will do two shampoos, so it isn't too bad for the price. I know 55ml doesn't sound a lot to wash a big dog like mine, but you have to mix it with 300ml of warm water first, as it
39;s quite concentrated and then you have a lot more to work with. It doesn't lather up too much, so it's fairly easy to rinse off depending on whether your dog keeps still for long enough. Luckily for me Sheba has realised that her bath is over all the sooner if she stands still, bless her! So, I like this dog shampoo because it has a lovely smell and it helps to stop the nasty beasties using my dog as a hotel and restaurant. It's easy to find in pets shops and supermarkets, I don't know about online pet shops, as I haven't had cause to look for it in any of them as yet. They don't seem to have a website themselves either. If you need more in formation on flea control you can write to them at: - Johnson's Veterinary Products Ltd. Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.
