Advantages: Kills the little devils dead
Disadvantages: May harm some surfaces
Having sorted out my cat’s personal little ‘friends’ with Frontline my thoughts turn to the eggs that may have been laid in carpets, soft furnishings and the animal’s bedding. The bedding was the easiest to deal with as my cat positively refused to use a nice large box that I had prepared for him and has never once slept in it. He had a sniff around and decided that the windowsill above the radiator was a much better place during the day and at night he prefers the top of a bookshelf, which is also near the radiator. However had he been a normal cat and used his very own box the simple solution for his bedding would be to spray it with a household flea spray and next day shove it in the washer and give it a good hot wash, a thorough rinse and NO FABRIC CONDITIONER. However care must be taken to make sure that the cat is not tangled up in the bedding before chucking it in the washer. But I was spared that chore. As for the rest it had to be Johnson’s Household Flea Spray, which it was claimed would decimate the fleas and the flea larvae and as far as I can tell it does just that. It is round about this time that people who hear talk of fleas or read about them that they start to have an itch here and there. So go on have a good scratch and read on. I promise you reading this will not give you fleas. At three pounds odd for a 150ml spray can it is a bit on the expensive side but it is C.F.C. free so you won’t add to the destruction of the ozone layer. Now all cats have their favourite places to lounge around in and these areas need to be tackled first. But first remove the cat and other pets, food, plants and fish bowls/tanks from the room. If the fish tank is too large to move safely cover it up and keep it covered for at least one hour after spraying. Make sure that the room is well ventilated and it states on the can to hold it about 15 inches (38 cms for those fully integrated with th
e metric system) away from the place you wish to treat. It also states on the can that you should use 8 seconds bursts per square metre of surface, but what do they know. If you took their advice the can would be used up pretty quick and you would need to buy another one or even two to do a room. I favour holding the can about 9 inches away from the surface being sprayed and with multiple short bursts spray away. Once around the room at the edge of the carpet is as good a place as any to start followed by under the cushions on the easy chairs and settee. Odd corners that rarely see the light of day tend to get forgotten, so remember them and launch your attack. Do not be tempted to give puss a quick squirt as when he has forgiven you he will only start to lick himself and could easily expire with his fleas. Take care if spraying delicate fabrics, polished or plastic surfaces as there could be an adverse reaction. It is probably best to cover them up first. Avoid breathing in the spray mist and the best way to do this is to use a filter mask or a damp handkerchief held over the nose and mouth. Do not handle the sprayed surfaces until the mist has dried (about half an hour) and thoroughly wash your hands after use. Store the part used can away from direct sunlight and heat and where children WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET AT IT. Better still when they are old enough show them how to use it safely. One final word of caution. Like any aerosol spray, a naked flame could turn it into a blowtorch so don’t go spraying around with a fag hanging from your mouth or with the gas fire burning away merrily. You want to kill the fleas not roast them.
