Advantages: Very strong & durable, gives hours of canine pleasure
Disadvantages: The rope attached to the toy is easily chewed
What do you humans know about what us dogs like to chew? My owner knows very little or I wouldn't have chewed through the seat belts in his car or through the slippers he got last Christmas if he'd given something decent to play & chew with.
He obviously doesn't know that us dogs naturally chew & that we need something challenging to sink our teeth into on a regular basis. I don't mean those awful squeaky latex toys that Trixie the toy poodle down the road has but real butch toys like a Kong.
My owner tried those squeaky latex toys but because my teeth are so strong I destroyed them in minutes, spitting out the little plastic squeaker in disgust, all he did was complain about the cost!
He then tried those toys made from the same material as tennis balls, nope, they lasted about five minutes & then he tried a stronger rubber toy but eventually I pulled it apart too, then he complained again about the cost!
The cool labrador next door has a Kong, its red to match his collar & he takes it everywhere. The boxer down the road has a blue one & I nearly snaffled it one day when he wasn't looking.
Eventually after I destroyed so many toys, seat belts, slippers & chewed the laces out of his good shoes my owner bought me an orange coloured Kong claiming 'he'll never chew this to bits'.
Problem was it had a rope attached, ugh!! I destroyed that in minutes & my owner had to cut the rest if it off whilst cursing & swearing. Now I have the basic Kong & it's a cracker!
Kongs come in all sizes for all types of dogs; they list the sizes in relation to the dogs on the packaging. Because I'm a West Highland Terrier with big teeth & a big attitude, I have a large Kong designed for Siberian Huskies according to the packaging.
The rubber the Kong is made from is really thick rubber making the toy a little heavier than expected. Its shape is rounded & it becomes a challenge for us dogs to hold it with our paws & chew at the same time, that's the fun of it.
The rope was the weak link in its design & didn't last long but the Kong really is indestructible. The rope makes it good for throwing but its too chewable for me. The Kong is made from very thick rubber & is ideal for indoor & outdoor use.
If you throw them they bounce all over the place which is great fun. My owner puts biscuits inside the hollow centre when he goes out & leaves me alone in the house. I think he thinks it some sort of canine Krypton Factor & I struggle to get the biscuits out. I have to lick them until they go all soggy & fall out, damn humans!!
I would love to put his custard creams inside a Kong & see him get them out with just his mouth!!
So its thumbs up (sorry, paws up) from me for the Kong, they really are indestructible, great to chew & fun to play with on my own in the garden or inside the house or with even with a human. They are quite expensive at £7.45 (like, I care!!) for a large one but they will last for many years. And of course I look a real cool hound walking around the streets with my orange Kong in my mouth.
Summary: A good strong durable dog toy

- 07/08/09 Well ScottishWestie, you do write well.I can understand your master's concern at having to cut the rope off your brand new toy!! I feel the same when Moses shreds the ropes on his toys:o)
Great review. |
