I have quite a few hairball/laxative treatments in stock at all times, apparently the different brands taste different because my boys (cats) don't like the same ones. This must be a difference in how malty or oily they are as some are very stodgy and dark and others very runny and light.
Defurr-Um is another product made by Mark & Chappell and is available to buy for £5.41 for a 70g tube at www.vetuk.co.uk. I'm sure alot of other sites sell it but I always get mine there. It is a tube with a screw off lid that you can also stand the product on to encourage the paste out of the bottom of the tube.
The product is quite a sticky one, it is essentially petroleum jelly flavoured by malt that lubricates the digestive tract in cats and helps furballs to ease through the cat's stomach or softens stools in the constipated cat. All these types of product vary a bit in consistency and this one is not as stodgy as Katalax but not as runny as some of the others I have used on my two so it's midway, a bit sticky and holds it's shape on your finger but easy enough to squeeze out of the tube. It's mid brown in colour whereas some other brands are light brown and some very dark brown.
The instructions are to give adult cats a quarter of a teaspoon (half an inch) weekly to prevent furballs or half a teaspoon (1 inch) daily for 3 days to remove a furball or for constipation. Kittens need half those doses. As it is considered a palatable paste you can either offer the product on your finger for your cat to lick off or rub it on their paws so they have to lick it off if they won't take it this way. Personally I offer it on my fingers and if they don't like it we try another brand rather than me wiping sticky paste all over them!
As far as my two go one of mine needs help with his furball elimination. This little lad has never been able to just throw up a furball on it's own if necessary and when he has one it brings up everything in his stomach as well. Grass doesn't help with this and he still vomits all the contents of his stomach. He also has very thick fur, not long but very dense so when he moults he really loses alot.
My other lad has no trouble with furballs as such and can eliminate them on their own easily and without much bother but he has always been prone to constipation so over the years we've tried a variety of these products to keep him regular.
So what did my boys think of Defurr-Um? One hated it. He didn't like the smell so wouldn't even consider a taste, he walked away and couldn't be coaxed into trying it. Rather than smear it on his fur I use a different brand with him that he does like much to his relief!
My other lad however loves it, he thinks these products are a treat because I make a big deal of them and make the appropriate sounds that imply a treat. He has used this many times in the past when his digestion has been a bit sluggish and it works very well, an inch a day has things moving along in a day or two and the end result is softer stools which are of course going to be much more comfortable for your cat to pass.
So really the only problem you may have with this is your fussy feline might not like it! The contents of the tube are easy to squeeze out and when I reach the end I snip the top of the tube off with scissors and scoop the rest out with my finger. It lasts well as they only need a small amount at a time and stays fresh but I will admit the nozzle gets a bit gooey after a few uses and needs wiping. It is also inexpensive and works well.
I'm going to give this 5 stars even though one of my lads doesn't like it as it's not the products fault! If your cat doesn't like this one there are lots of different ones out there to try and don't think they all taste identical because they don't so it's worth trying a few or having a few in stock so if they get bored of one you can switch to another.
An extremely useful product, for one of my lads anyway!
