Advantages: Healthy, hypoallergenic, no cheap fillers
Disadvantages: Packs are hard to open
Nature Diet is a premium wet dog food that comes in sealed plastic trays. The food is approved by the British Association of Holistic Nutrition and made under strict 'No Animal Testing' conditions. These sort of things give the impression of a good ethical company and hopefully the same is of the product.
Nature Diet packs are available from most good pet shops snd you can buy single packs of 390g (around 65p each) or a case of 18 x 390g (around £10) although you can't get a mixed flavour multipack. There is a large range of flavours available and in the 'premium' range there is chicken, chicken and tripe and lamb all with rice and carrots, original, fish and rice, lite and puppy diet. All these flavours are hypoallergenic with no added colours, flavours or preservatives so good for even the most sensitive dog and also dogs with problem skin and those owners who just want the best.
When I feed my dogs Nature Diet I choose the Fish and rice flavour. I bring the packs into the kitch and don't even bother trying to peel back the film on top of the tray. This is nigh on impossible so I just use a knife to open the pack. I am the faced eith a block of food resembling meat pate. It is light brown in colour and you can see the rice within the block. You can smell the fist in Nature Diet straight away and the dogs start sitting pretty in the hope I'll hurry up. Checking the packaging, the food does contain 60% ocean fish. Comparing this to Pedigree tins 4% meat, you can see where the price difference comes from immediately.
I have found that Nature Diet foods are very appealing to dogs' taste buds so useful for encouraging fussy dogs to eat. However, the packaging states that the packs may be served at room temperature or you can zap them in the microwave for a minute to serve them warm. This makes them absolutely irresistible. Fussy dog? What fussy dog!
My main objection to wet food is the dental concerns brought on by the food coating the teeth. This isn't as bad with Nature Diet as a tinned food. Because it is a pate there are no gravys or jellies to stick to the the teeth. There are also no additives or cheap fillers in the food which make dental problems in dogs worse. Of course, eating Nature Diet won't clean a dog's teeth like dry kibble does but eating a pack mixed with a high quality dry food will make any meal more interesting. Some dogs just won't eat dried food. Nature Diet is perfect for them.
Summary: My favourite wet food

- 16/06/08 My two thankfully love their JWB or Burns kibble, and always clear their bowls, but I like to add something different occasionally, and this seems ideal! Good review |
