Advantages: different speed settings

Disadvantages: Price, longevity

I just celebrated my birthday and as I recently got a new kitten a asked my parents to get me the panic mouse for him. I'm a student and often feel the demands of my always playful kitten difficult to juggle with the demands of my university work. I thought the panic mouse was a great idea as it would allow me to work and my kitten to play at the same time, without me feeling guilty about neglecting one of them.

So when i opened my presents i was pleased to find a box with the panic mouse inside. When you open it its very very simple to put together. All you need to do is attach the tail. It also comes with a weird strip of yellow plastic which I have no idea what its for so just left it out. It requires 3 x AA batteries which go on the tummy of the mouse. The Mouse has an adjustable position, rather like a desk fan, you can move it up or down, I'm not overly sure why this is helpful, it may just be so they can pack it more efficiently. The main body of the mouse is a yellow submarine colour and plastic. It has the facial features of the mouse on it. The tail is a rather flimsy metal with a little black ball attached to it which is fluffy. This enables the cat to bend the tail when he grabs it so that it doesnt snap or whack him.

The mouse is turned on using the pink nose. You twist clockwise and the further you twist the faster the tail spins. Anti clockwise turns it down and off. I found that my kitten liked the speed to be about half way, otherwise he just stared at it because it went to fast or he ran away as he was scared of it. Too slow and its boring for him.

Unfortunately, although this is a great idea, my kitten doesnt seemed as enthralled as i was. He plays for a couple of minutes and then gets bored with and finds something more interesting to play with. He prefers toys i brought him for a couple of pounds or even a scrunched up piece of paper. Considering the panic mouse costs £19.99 this is a little frustrating for owners who like to spoil pets and they are unappreciative of it lol. I was suprised that my kitten doesnt like it as I often play the same game with him with things that dangle but I suppose i have more of a range and can anticipate what hes going to do and so am able to put it in places or whip it out of the way just before he gets to it. Obviously the panic mouse can do no such thing and is just random. I thought Simba might find this more fun but obviously he prefers his play partner to be more intelligent and so more challenging than the panic mouse is.

I'm also not entirely sure why it is called panic mouse. Theres nothing paniccy about it, apart from when it goes too fast and scares my poor kitten.

Summary: A good toy in theory but my kitten doesnt like it in practice.

If all mice panicked like the panic mouse they would all be dead by now!
