Advantages: Tasty and affordable

Disadvantages: Not enough nutrients, causes strange toilet habits.

When we first got our Springer Spaniel puppy Alfie at 12 weeks old, we started feeding him the Pedigree puppy pouches. After quickly discovering that these were not enough to keep from feeling hungry between meals, we soon switched to Pedigree dry puppy complete. At first this seemed much more suitable as it seemed to fill him much more and seemed to be tasty enough, but his toilet habits became rather strange.

Although he was not fully housetrained until he was six months old, he would go to the toilet in the house every night and then first thing in the morning. On a short walk (30 mins) he would go to the toilet approx four/five times and this would always be loose and sloppy. On a long walk (2 hours) he could go up to ten times. At first we thought this was a habit he had developed (or an allergy to the food/stomach disorder). After speaking to the vet, it became apparent that the type of fibre in this food often makes puppies have this type of toilet problem.

As we began to compare the content of the food to other products on the market, we found that the food contained only 4% chicken and 4% rice. Whilst we understood that we would not be buying the highest quality food at the cost of Pedigree (between £5.50-£7.50 for a 3kg bag), we expected that such a popular brand would have more goodness than it seems to.

I changed Alfie's food soon after to a brand recommended by the vet which was more expensive (but only marginally bought in bulk) and his toilet habits changed within a couple of days. He now only goes to the toilet once on a walk (and is perfectly solid) and never messes in the house! I will not go back to Pedigree.

Summary: The money I saved in food was spent on poo bags!
