I'm the owner of 5 rather delightful but decidedly messy guinea pigs and I'm always looking for products that will help me tackle the job of cleaning their cages. My boys can be quite dirty boars and so I have to do a full clean every 3 days, despite the fact that each cage is 7ft long they still manage to turn it into a pigsty in what seems like a matter of hours, probably due to the fact they aren't litter trained and so will pee and poop willy nilly wherever the fancy takes them. I don't use traditional woodshavings or newspaper as the bedding for my cages, instead I use puppy pads as a liner to soak up all the urine and lock it away and then soft fleece blankets for my top layer. I love using fleece as it's lovely and comfy for their little feet and does a good job at staying dry as the wee just whicks right through to the underlayer. As well as my fleece I use litter trays under the hay racks as the boys do tend to do alot of their pooing and weeing whilst they're having a good old nom; the litter trays help contain some of the mess and do quite a good job at keeping most of the loose hay in too, instead of it being dragged everywhere over the fleece.
Despite all this I find come clean out day that inevitably some of their poos have ended up squidged in the corners or that they've somehow rolled under the fleece, pee sometimes will leak under any gaps in the pads and sit on the base where it will have dried and left marks. Usually I tend to scrub these marks and dirty areas with a pet safe disinfectant and a nail brush but this can be a bit of a faff as I have to clean the brush itself afterwards; whilst in Pets at Home (as usual) I saw these wipes and decided to give them a try. Pets at Home claim: "Cage Cleaning Wipes with Byotrol is a multi-functional solution and will: disinfect; clean away surface dirt using the deep woven fibres; kill bacteria and viruses; deodorise, leaving a clean, mild fragrance. Cage Cleaning Wipes with Byotrol is suitable for use on cages, feeding bowls, bedding and drinkers and is safe to use regularly."
We are also told that the wipes are safe for Chinchillas, Chipmunks, Degus, Dwarf Hamsters, Ferrets, Gerbils, Giant Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Hamsters, Mice, Rabbits and Rats. Each pack of wipes will set you back the sum of £2.29 which I do think is reasonable considering the quality of the product, the wipes themselves are quite small but not overly flimsy, they've a good thickness so that I can use a wipe per cage without it falling to bits as I clean. When using them they tackle pooey bits and pee pee stains very well, removing the tell tale white marks of the urine from the plastic base and leaving it looking as good as new. The fragrance they have is very mild, enough so that I don't have to worry about them affecting my boys' delicate respiratory systems and I am glad to say that once I've wiped the cage it dries out in good time, meaning that I can get on with putting in new puppy pads without having to wait an age for all the moisture to have disappeared.
I love the fact that they actively kill bacteria and viruses so my lads can remain happy and healthy in their homes without the worry that faeces germs will remain and multiply before infecting my pigs with some nasty illness or other. Overall I would say that these wipes are a cracking product and so simple and effective to use, they do the job well and the fact that they exterminate all germs is a bonus; a product that I will continue to buy time and time again. Definitely recommended for all small pet owners as we all know how messy our little rascals can be!
I like to keep our cat litter trays clean and smelling fresh. Now I know what you are thinking - what is this woman on abot cat litter trays for when these are cage cleaning wipes? Am I right? Honestly, I haven't gone mad in the slightest. I use these wipes for our cat litter trays when I am cleaning them out. I also have a spray to do this with too but when I am running low on spray, I use these too.
I saw these in Pets At Home and found myself wondering if they could be used on cat litter trays. I assumed they could because they are normally used on the cages of small animals like hamsters, rats, mice etc. But still I asked one of the assistants and she said that you could and she knew of a few people who used them solely for the cat litter tray.
The wipes are a pack of 20 and cost £2.19 which I think it pretty reasonable plus I only need to change my cat litter tray once a week for a total clean out so the 20 a pack lasts me 20 weeks. They are Pets At Home's own brand and therefore can only be purchased at Pets At Home. They come in a resealable pack so that they do not dry out as if air gets to them over a period of time the air will suck the moisture out of them.
The wipes are solely for the purpose of cleaning and they have a solution called byotrol in them. Byotrol is a veterinary solution which aims to kill bacteria, fungus and viruses which can harm your pet. The wipes also help to kill smells and deodorise the area which has been cleaned with them leaving the area with a mild fragrance.
The wipes themselves are white in colour and have a deep woven fibre which helps to pick up the smallest piece of dirt - dirt the naked eye probably wouldn't even notice. The wipes are a fair size and feel moist to touch. They are fairly similar to baby wipes in my opinion. The wipes are also safe to use on a regular basis.
The wipes are very easy and effective to use. I have found that they clean the cat litter tray really well and always bring it up nice and clean with a nice refreshing smell. The wipes really do kill that lingering after smell you get when you have just emptied a cat litter tray. The tray always smells really fresh again and it stays that way until the next time I have to clean the tray out. Catsan and these wipes go well together.
I can also add that the wipes have never caused any irritation to my cats in anyway though obviously as with anything some animals can be prone to irritation with such products so it is best to keep an eye out.
Highly recommended for cleaning out a litter tray. I am sure these work wonders on cages too!
I have used these for cleaning the bases of my hamster cages. They don't really work very well, once the cage has been emptied out there are always bits of sawdust left stuck to the cage base meaning that you still have to rinse the cage out before you use the wipe which rather goes against the point of having wipes! although they do work as a good disinfectant wipes which is something rinsing won't do. They just don't get rid of anywhere near enough mess to make them practical they fail to make life any easier, and if you are cleaning numerous cages you need tons of wipes. A couple per cage soon adds up! making them not very cost effective. for just wiping cage tops and toys they work as long as no scrubbing is needed. They do have a fresh scent, preferable to hamster wee but they just don't warrant buying for major cage cleaning washing up liquid and hot water works much better any day, but if your in a rush they will give a quick clean or if you are just wiping out a new cage or toy. they dry pretty quickly and normally drying isn't needed after using them, but if you wash a cage first make sure you dry it before using the wipe. I have only ever used these with my hamsters but they are suitable for other small pets. To my knowledge they are only available from pets at home.
A fast and effective wipe solution to clean, disinfect, deodorise and kill the bacteria and viruses that reside in small pet cages.
