I bought a bag of lavender scented wood shavings from Pets at home they were on offer 2 for £8 so I also got another bag of wood shavings which was Lemon scented.
I used these in my guinea pigs cages/hutches. Once I opened the bag of shavings I could smell the lavender! I spread some on the bottom of the cages/hutches, and also put lot's in the corner where they sleep. The shavings felt super soft, it was like a luxury type of wood shavings if that makes sense! Once in use, I noticed not only did it smell nice it is also very absorbent and dust free. The fresh smell did last for day's - much better than the usual smell!
On the next clean, I used the lemon scented wooden shavings - once again when I opened the bag I could smell the lemon! I would actually say I prefer the lemon smell to the lavender, it was a little bit stronger but I liked it, it smelt nice, clean and fresh. I spread it around the cages and more at the bedding area. This was also just as soft as the lavender scented bag.
I would buy this scented wood shavings again because of the nice smell, but more than that I would buy it just for the pure softness of it - much softer than other shavings. The only thing I am not certain of is how my guinea pigs like the lavender and lemon smell, for all I know they could hate the smell and prefer the more natural smell so for that reason I will remain unsure - I will buy again but not every time.
When we had our dwarf hamsters, we used wood shavings to line the bottom of their cage (cage review written).
(Pet shop) Wood shavings are good as they are soft and great for odour control.
Normally I would purchase the regular wood shaving bale, however when they ran out of that I took the next available one which happened to be the Medium Lavender wood shavings bale. To be honest for dwarf hamsters, the medium bale was plenty and lasted for ages!
The bale comes in 40 x 29 x 10.5 cm and is wrapped in a see-through plastic wrap. There is an image of small animals on the side to show which pets this can be used for. There is also some description and typical details about the product printed.
The bale is tightly packed and you are best opening one end and grabbing a handful then crumbling it up as fine as possible. Any overly large pieces that don't crumble should be removed. (Please note that in all my time using any of the wood shavings products from pets at home, I have only ever come across two pieces that were longer and a little harder than the rest which were then removed).
The shavings are very soft and crumble easily to give a nice covering to the bottom of the cage and toilet (if you have a specific toilet section in your cage).
Wood shavings are great as they are very absorbent and help to reduce odour. The Pets at Home wood shavings are dust free, which is good not just for the hamsters but me too as I have allergies to dust.
The lavender aspect is definitely there but personally I found it made no major different compared to the normal bale. The regular bale keeps the odour well controlled so while the lavender adds a small fragrance, I do think you are paying for something that isn't really necessary.
Lavender is meant to have calming properties so maybe if you have very overactive or nervous hamsters (or other small pets) this type of bedding would have added benefits. My hamsters were never that nervous though.
The packaging is the stretchy type so can be recycled via PolyPrint (http://www.polyprint.co.uk/pages/recycling.php) who accept certain types of plastic wrap for recycling. Details and their contact address to send any too is on the website above.
The shavings are biodegradable and so can be composted (even with waste material from your animal - composts can take small animal waste).
Pets at home sell this at around £6.00 a bale.
Woodshavings from Pets at Home are good to use, soft and make great bedding, however I am dropping a point for the lavender-ness of this as I truly find it unnecessary and so more costly.
This review is also on my ciao account under the username alexcatt97. The medium bale of lavender scented wood shavings from Pets at home are sold for £5.49 which is £1.40 more than the normal medium bale of wood shavings and you can also get them in Lemon scent for the same price off £5.49. When I went into Pets at home for some wood shavings, I found these are thought I would try them instead of the regular bale of normal wood shavings and see if there was anything better about them than the normal bale except from the lavender scent. In this review I will be talking about Effectiveness and Value for money. The medium bale would weigh 3.3 kg
Once I had arrived back home from Pets at home I thought that I would clean out the hamster cages to use the wood shavings. Once I opened the packet, you could smell it and it was quite pleasant and as hamsters use the smell more than their sight, I thought they would also like it and I did not see them reject it, so I thought they must have as they were also using it as their bedding which they didn't usually do. Also, my hamster cages would usually start to stink sometimes during the week when i would replace the litter in the toilets and the wood shavings sort of muffled the smell and made the cage smell very nice with the lavender scent. The wood shavings are also very absorbent and dust free so there would not be loads of urine of the base of the cage and there would not be loads of dust all over the place so that is very helpful. This is very helpful as it helps the cage stay fresh and I would not have my family complaining of a smell coming from the cages when they walked past.
===Value for money===
Some people may not like paying more for wood shavings just because they have a scent but I don't mind paying £1.40 more because it helps a lot to keep your cage, cleaner, more hygienic, fresh and easier clean. It might be a bit pricy but in my opinion it is worth it and it is worth the extra money. Also £5.49 is not much to pay considering that the medium bale will last quite a long time and you will find that it is cheaper than other pet stores such as PamPured pets.
In summary, these wood shavings are a good but because they can be a big help to you when cleaning and can prevent horrible smells which are covered by the pleasant lavender scent. I would definitely recommend this to someone if they need wood shavings if they are prepared to pay a little bit more than the normal unscented wood shavings. Also my hamster's loved them and used it for bedding.
