Pets at Home Lavender Woodshavings
Advantages: very absorbant, controls odour, biodegradable
Disadvantages: lavender scent unnecessary, more costly due to scent
When we had our dwarf hamsters, we used wood shavings to line the bottom of their cage (cage review written).
(Pet shop) Wood shavings are good as they are soft and great for odour control.
Normally I would purchase the regular wood shaving bale, however when they ran out of that I took the next available one which happened to be the Medium Lavender wood shavings bale. To be honest for dwarf hamsters, the medium bale was plenty and lasted for ages!
The bale comes in 40 x 29 x 10.5 cm and is wrapped in a see-through plastic wrap. There is an image of small animals on the side to show which pets this can be used for. There is also some description and typical details about the product printed.
The bale is tightly packed and you are best opening one end and grabbing a handful then crumbling it up as fine as possible. Any overly large pieces that don't crumble should be removed. (Please note that in all my time using any of the wood shavings products from pets at home, I have only ever come across two pieces that were longer and a little harder than the rest which were then removed).
The shavings are very soft and crumble easily to give a nice covering to the bottom of the cage and toilet (if you have a specific toilet section in your cage).
Wood shavings are great as they are very absorbent and help to reduce odour. The Pets at Home wood shavings are dust free, which is good not just for the hamsters but me too as I have allergies to dust.
The lavender aspect is definitely there but personally I found it made no major different compared to the normal bale. The regular bale keeps the odour well controlled so while the lavender adds a small fragrance, I do think you are paying for something that isn't really necessary.
Lavender is meant to have calming properties so maybe if you have very overactive or nervous hamsters (or other small pets) this type of bedding would have added benefits. My hamsters were never that nervous though.
The packaging is the stretchy type so can be recycled via PolyPrint (http://www.polyprint.co.uk/pages/recycling.php) who accept certain types of plastic wrap for recycling. Details and their contact address to send any too is on the website above.
The shavings are biodegradable and so can be composted (even with waste material from your animal - composts can take small animal waste).
Pets at home sell this at around £6.00 a bale.
Woodshavings from Pets at Home are good to use, soft and make great bedding, however I am dropping a point for the lavender-ness of this as I truly find it unnecessary and so more costly.
