When I had to have my much loved and very sweet hamster Jasper put to sleep two days before Christmas I vowed that I couldn't put myself through it again and told my son that we weren't having another hamster. My sister needed to go to pets at home one day to treat her rabbit and she took my son and me along with her. As we went to the pet shop my son and I were drawn to the hamsters once more and I agreed that we could have another one. As Jasper had been quite poorly before he was put to sleep I had thrown his cage and everything as I didn't even want to chance infection for a new hamster should I have wanted one down the line and so everything needed to be replaced for our new hamster Harry. When we had bought all of the essentials I said that my son could choose a "toy" for the cage and he chose the Woodlands small pet play tunnel which I thought looked a good buy.

The Woodlands small pet play tunnel is a long and thin hollow piece of wood which has various holes around it which your small pet can climb in and out of. I know from past experience that hamsters quite often like to hide and so I thought that this would be a good buy, especially for a shy new hamster as well. As the tunnel is made out of wood as well it is a handy piece of kit to have in the cage because your hamster is able to nibble the product and keep their long teeth in order in a safe and natural way.

The cage that I have for Harry now has quite a large base but isn't very tall where as Jaspers cage was tall rather than wide with lots of places to climb. As such this product fits nicely in Harrys cage and there is still plenty of space around for him to wander around as well but I know it wouldn't have fit well in Jaspers cage and so I would say certainly be mindful of what your cage is like before purchasing the toy.

The tunnel is made from natural wood and has a looser bark all around it with a smoother wood inside. Harry has stripped the top of his tunnel from the bark and so I can see the smooth wood underneath there! As yet though this is all he has really chewed with the tunnel as there are no obvious teeth marks anywhere else in the tunnel that I can see.

The first day that we brought Harry home he was very keen to go in and out of the holes in the tunnel as he explored his new surroundings but to be honest he doesn't go in it all that much now from what I have seen but I will see him standing on top of it up on two feet like a meerkat! The holes in it are quite small and I did worry that as Harry got bigger that he may not be able to fit through it but he can still go through it he just chooses not to do it very often and much prefers exercising on his wheel instead. Despite Harry not using his tunnel all that often I do still think that it was a really good buy because he has something in there that he can hide in if he wants to, can play with and will also act as something to chew as well for him and this is all in one product which I think is really handy!

The Woodlands small pet play tunnel costs just £2.89 from pets at home and I think that this is an excellent price to pay for something which will last well because even if your hamster was to chew the tunnel constantly I think it would take a lot before it was so damaged it needed to be removed from the cage. I would perhaps say that should your hamster choose to use the tunnel as a toilet that it would be tricky and possibly impossible to clean it properly but luckily Harry hasn't done this and so I recommend the product.
