Advantages: The dot is fairly good
Disadvantages: Silly battery size, not all pictures work
My little Moggy Shadow doesn't really play with very many toys, he seems much happier with a length of string and a bottle lid than anything that I have bought for him. I've lost count of the amount of money I have spent on toys for him to ignore but having heard that many cats go wild chasing laser pointers I picked up the Pets At Play 5 in 1 Laser Chaser for him for £4.99 while in Pets at Home.
What you get for your money is a small pointer about 3 inches long with both a key ring and hook on the end of it. It looks just like a miniature torch You can get five different shapes of light to shine by twisting the end of the chaser. The choices are a dot, a star, a smiley face, a mouse and a butterfly.
It's pretty uncomfortable to use the chaser, the button has to be depressed the whole time that the light is on which hurts my fingers. The laser itself is red and fairly bright. The dot is really nice and clear to see even in daylight but the other shapes are a waste of time as the diffused light is so weak it only shows up in the dark and even then the pictures only show up when focussed the perfect distance from the wall.
The cat enjoys chasing the dot occasionally, when he is in the right mood for it. It is really funny when my daughter shines the light onto his paws and he will try to eat it and then look confused when his mouth is empty. He will occasionally chase the dot around the room and again this is pretty funny to watch. I wouldn't say it was a massive hit with him but he has had some fun with it.
Now I'll tell you what I don't like about the toy. The first thing I don't like is my daughters fascination with the toy, she drives me crazy shining it around and has even tried to sneak it out to the park. Laser pointers and kids are not a great combination as they can be dangerous when pointed in the eyes and a nuisance to other people. I do worry that we will end up pointing it into the cats eyes accidently when he is chasing it around too. The second thing I don't like is the fact it takes 3 AAA or button sized batteries which will probably cost more than the pointer is worth to replace. I would have much preferred it if they had used a single AA sized battery instead to make it easier on the consumer.
Overall the toy is a fairly poor buy because it is uncomfortable to use, only one of the patterns is any good and because of the button batteries. It's certainly not worth the £5 I paid for what is essentially a key ring with a red light on it; I think I'll stick with bits of string for the cat to play with and stop wasting my money on toys.
Summary: Not worth the money I paid for it

- 01/07/09 We bought Millie so many toys over the last few months we have had her. Her favourites? Plastic plant pot, inside of toilet rolls. |

- 30/06/09 I totally agree with your last sentence - I have spent so much money on toys and lovely cushions etc for my Jazz but at the end of the day, all he really likes is sleeping on my laundry and a piece of string! |

- 28/06/09 I watched a video on You Tube the other day watching an owner using a laser pen on their cat. It is funny but put the article into the hands of a child outside and as you say, it can be a nuisance. However I know of one child in our town who was put on a juvenile court charge because they were persistent to shine the laser into on coming cars and passengers. It builds up a lot of anxiety to people as it often reminds them of a gun target being shone on them. |
