Advantages: Simple treats, cute packaging, great flavour (for a cat)
Disadvantages: Quite pricey, no info on tin about recommended usage
Simba is now six months old. I had read in my research before getting him that cats should not have bad breath. After many years of dogs having stinky breath I didnt really know why cats shouldnt have it but even so I asked the vet if she had heard of this and thankfully she told me it was rubbish. A cat with bad breath is not a sign of poor health. Simba has had fairly bad breath since I got him and for the first five months it didnt bother me. However over the christmas period I noticed it was getting worse. I'm not sure why, his diet hadnt changed at all and he doesn't go outside killing birds etc. It got to the point that I desperately wanted to find something to freshen him up.
Queue the trip to pets at home. I knew full well that anything that involved me having to go into his mouth was a no-no, he likes to bite. So a cat tooth brush was not on the agenda. After staring around for ages and not seeing anything relevant I went to the front desk and asked for some assistance. The nice pets at home employee me took me back to exactly where I had been standing and pointed out the options availbale which had been right under my nose. (Having worked in retail myself I know how frustrated I use to get when customers did this to me lol) There were a couple of options and I explained that I was going to need something treat based.
Pit'r Pat attracted me due to the bright colours on the tin lol. Its mostly pink with yellow writing as per the picture. A gorgeous white cat features on the front. There are white little fishes too, which are basically what the treats actually look like inside. The fact that they are in a tin mean that they also stay nice and fresh and the whole design is reminiscent of human breath mints you can buy.
They treats are liver flavoured (So not sure why they are the shape of a fish) they also contain Green tea which is the ingrediant that freshens breath. The rest of the ingrediants are as follows:-
Maltodextrin, Liver, Sodium Phosphate, Vegetable Oil, Chlorophyll, Green Tea, Lecithin, Mixed Tocopherols, Rosemary Oil
Typical Analysis:-
Moisture 12%, Protein 10%, Oils and Fats 4%, Fibre 4%, Ash 8%
This information is found on the back of the tin. It also tells you their website is www.chompinc.com if you would like further information.
I think they smell a bit like gravy, but I know that Simba goes mad for them. He absolutely loves them and even paws the tin if you leave it lying around. The only thing I would say is that the tin does not give you any information about how many he can have a day. I give Simba one a day, as he has a variety of treats. I find that this freshens his breath suitably to a tolerant level. BUT I do also give him a treat called "Sherley's Dental Easy Treat" (also from pets at home and a cheaper alternative, although the packaging isnt as fun and Simba doesnt get as excited over these. They contain an abundance of Chlorophyll which absorbs bad smells and polishes the teeth) Combined together means Simba's breath, while not minty fresh, is more normal for a cat I think. When researching them online, pets at homes website states a cat can have up to 7 a day. SO considering I only use one they must work pretty well.
{at this moment in time Simba just spotted I have the tin out to look at it and came purring over to knock the tin on the floor lol. I think they get a thumbs up from him!}
The fact that the companys line is "Candy for Cats" may be a bit off putting for some. But thats really what treats are. They are relatively expensive for a 7g tin coming in at £2.14. But I'm pleased with the results and as he only gets one a day they're lasting quite a while.
One other thing they thought it appropriate to put on the tin was *Not for human consumption* lol, just in case ;)
Summary: Has Simba puuurrrring for me. Much easier than shoving a toothbrush in his mouth.
