Advantages: Dental hygeine, less damage to house

Disadvantages: The paste that you can buy with it is awful

Anyone who has ever had a dog will know what damage they are capable of if they are not entertained or do not have enough toys to hold their attention. This is even more so when they start teething, losing their baby teeth and getting their adult teeth, which are the ones which have the capability to cause the most damage. We wanted to make sure that when our dog reached this stage she not only had toys which would entertain her but also ones which could ease any discomfort that she was suffering. We came across Puppy Kong products in our local pet store and they seemed to fit the bill on all accounts, so we chose the puppy teething stick. The toy is sold in sizes small, medium and large. We chose the medium size for our Staffie pup when she was about 14 weeks old.

The toy is made from blue soft natural rubber (also available in pink) and is cylindrical in shape, and about 4 inches long. Down the length of the toy there are grooves where you can place Puppy Kong treats or the Puppy Kong Paste as an extra treat when they are chewing. We also bought the paste, but it is a really messy job filling the grooves from the aerosol tin which squirts the foul smelling paste out too quickly for it to sit in the grooves and not all over my hands. We know fill the grooves with doggy toothpaste so when she is playing with this toy her teeth and gums are also getting a good thorough clean and she has fresh smelling breath all day long. When the dog starts to chew the toy, it massages their gums, so soothes any discomfort and promotes good chewing behaviour.

We paid £2.75 for the chew, and our puppy has been using it daily for close to 3 months now, and there is no visible damage or deterioration. It has also down it's job in the fact that the puppy has barely damaged anything in the house apart from a small section of skirting board in the utility room where she sleeps. The Puppy Kongs are recommended for dogs aged 8 weeks up to 9 months old, and it is then recommended that they move onto the harder rubber adult Kong products.

Summary: Clean teeth and your house in one piece

When our Staffie was a pup we came home from the supermarket one day to find that she'd started chewing the wall. There was a massive chunk missing! I think we could've done with one of these :o)
