Roma Pebble Splint Brushing Boots
Advantages: Flexible and wash well
When it comes to horses there is a whole variety of equipment that you need and use whether just turning your horse out in the field or riding. One thing that I use on a daily basis is brushing boots. There sole purpose is to protect the horse's leg from 'brushing'. Brushing is basically the horse's front or back legs striking against the opposite leg. Therefore, the boots just take a bit of the impact and help protect.
There are one or two manufacturers who I tend to go to for brushing boots but whilst I was browsing in my local tack store I noticed the Roma Pebble Split Brushing Boots which appealed purely because of the material. Roma is a company owned by the globally renowned Weatherbeeta and the Roma products I do own are good quality and well made.
To look at the boots don't particularly look interesting! They only come in black and are quite thin and flexible compared to some of the harder shell type brushing boots but that isn't a bad thing at all. The boots come with three straps which fasten back on themselves and on the outside of the boots there is a raised edging (in black) which (when fitted correctly) sits on the inside of the leg.
The brushing boots are made of a neoprene type material which is not only lightweight and flexible but it is also a breathable material so should the horse sweat whilst working the material can help wick away the sweat which overall will make the horse more comfortable. The 'pebble' effect is simply the pattern on the material, the little 'pebbles' are slightly raised to give a bumpy effect but this is only on the outside of the boots.
The boots have a touch tape enclosure which is basically a strap that has a Velcro type material on but to fasten you simply put the strap through the silver metal D ring and then fold over onto the other side of the Velcro type material. It is important that they are not done up too tight or too loose as this is when injury may occur. The only downside with this sort of fastening is that it manages to trap every little hair, piece of hay etc so it is a good idea to keep the straps relatively clean so they can fasten.
My pair have had daily use for quite a few months now and have lasted remarkably well. I use them for either riding or turning my horse out into the field wearing them as he brushes quite badly. So far the straps are still in good condition and the flexible neoprene material is intact. I have washed them several times and they have come up as good as new which is great, apart from the Velcro they would look brand new! I have noticed the raised binding has had a few stray threads come undone but this is hardly an issue.
The most important this is that they help protect my horse's legs when being ridden and out in the field. They don't slip around his leg when moving which is very important as that could cause a problem, they stay in place and don't move. I really can't complain about them and so far I haven't found fault with them. Even though I do like the harder shelled brushing boot, these have swayed my mind as they are so useful and practical! A definite recommendation from me.
