Advantages: Easy to use, cheap

Disadvantages: None

When we first bought our new kitten Magic home, we suddenly realised that we didn't really have any of the things that we would need to look after a cat! So a quick trip to Sainsburys and the 'pets aisle' got us buying some Whiskas pouches, and also some much needed cat litter. I didn't know the difference between all the types available so I went for the medium priced one which was their own-brand Clumping cat litter.

In case you don't know, a litter box is where cats do their 'business' and therefore the litter is the stuff which sits inside the box and the stuff on which the cat actually goes. When we bought Magic, the lady told us that we already litter trained which was a relief for us, so we needed to get the litter set up asap. The litter came in an 8 litre bag which was fairly heavy (for little old me anyway!) in strong blue paper with a picture of a cat on, and the name of the product. It was only £1.60 for the bag which I thought was quite good value so I thought that one would be okay.

Using the litter is very easy, you just tear open the packet at the top underneath the paper handle and then pour the litter into your litter tray. Ideally, this should be around 7 cm deep as cats like to dig a hole to do their business into and then cover it up again so you have to allow them plenty of litter to do this into. The litter itself is like a fine grey gravel, miniatures stones which is easy to pour and use. I havent found that the litter has a particular smell which is good, but I still use a litter freshener on top just to keep it fresh smelling.

To take out the cats stuff when they are finished, you will need a litter scoop which you can buy from any supermarket alongside the litter products or in pet shops. Then you just have to find the lumps of litter, scoop them out in a bag and then put it into your bin. The beauty of this clumping litter is that it solidies around any cat poo and allows the easy removal of it. Because of this, it helps to mask any nasty smells and keeps the litter box quite clean as well.

When you empty the litter tray of any mess, ensure that you refill it so that the level remains the same so your cat will still be comfortable when he uses the litter box. The litter is made from natural clay, so you aren't using an unnatural product for your cat, and they will be happy to go on it. For the money, I think that this is an excellent litter product and it really makes cleaning up after Magic that much easier for me. I don't have to worry about the litter flying everywhere as I try to find his business, instead the lumps are easily identifiable with the litter scoop and of course they are easy to remove as well.

You should always refresh the litter once a week, removing all of the contents, washing out the litter tray and then putting in a fresh layer of litter into the box. I find that the 8 litre bag lasts Magic one week, with regular cleaning and emptying and I think that this is extremely good value for money. I have found that when I get to the end of the bag there is a fair amount of dust when you tip the bag up, so you should take care when using the last part of the litter in the bag so it doesn't go everywhere. £1.60 a week is a very good price to pay for this product and I would definitely recommend this litter to anyone who has a cat.

Available in all Sainsburys supermarkets and on the Sainsburys website for home delivery. Priced at £1.60 for an 8 litre bag. Packaging is paper so is fully recyclable after all contents are removed. The litter itself should be disposed of with usual household waste.

Thank you for reading.

Summary: A great cat product

I like the wood one but it tends to turn to sawdust which they spread around the house! It smells better but is a bit more pricey. I like this one for the rabbit - yes she does use the cat's litter tray if she comes inside. Sue

I'm lucky to have a cat that doesn't use a litter tray - she goes outside in all weathers!
