Advantages: Clumps to form hard balls of waste

Disadvantages: I can't find other supermarket versions, just Sainsburys

Cat litter maybe isn't the most exciting product in the world to write about, but those of you with cats will know there is a huge difference between types and brands, and that it really does make a difference!

I first discovered Sainsbury's Ultra Clumping Cat Litter about 4 years ago, and it is definately my cat litter of choice. It comes in a 5 litre bag currently priced £3.90. That might seem a lot for a small bag, but believe me, it lasts for ages.

I prefer clumping litter to non-clumping, but ultra clumping is better than standard clumping. Clumping litter when used clumps together on the bottom of the tray, but in my experience you can't lift those clumps out as they disintegrate, so you have to scrape it out. Ultra clumping however, is the kind that forms little hard balls when it is wet, which then kind of "float" (for want of a better word) in the tray and don't attach themselves to the bottom of the tray.

This litter is very fine, much finer than most kinds. This in itself is a bonus as I have a very enthusiastic cat who likes to kick it everywhere - and standing on larger grains of litter can be painful!

You fill the litter tray with this as with all other litters - to about 5cm deep. Once the cat uses it, there will be hard clumps of litter in it. You can use a litter scoop to take these out and dispose of. This is a major benefit as far as I'm concerned, because it means you do not need to empty the litter tray completely after a few days - you can lift out the waste and it remains fresh, or you can top it up if necessary.

You should still empty the tray completely fairly regularly and clean it, I tend to do this every 2 weeks although I think the instructions suggest weekly.

A bag of this litter lasts my cat for about 4-6 weeks, and given that one 8l bag of clumping litter lasts maximum two weeks, this is good value for money for the price.

I love this cat litter. It is much easier to use than standard clumping litter, and I find it so much less unpleasant to clean out than clumping as well. I haven't yet found any other supermarkets which make litter like this, and the only branded ultra clumping litter which I have tried is Catsan Ultra Clumping, which tends to be at least £1 more a bag.

I would strongly recommend that all cat owners who use litter, particularly those with indoor cats like me, give this litter a go! I have found it in every Sainsburys I have looked in for it, and it is available on their website too.

Summary: A really good litter which is better than clumping

Great idea but my cat disappears out into the garden to do her business.

Sounds a good one to consider for Jet and Megs tray.
