Hi My name is Poppy and I am about four years old. Unfortunately my mummy doesn't know when I was born so I have to have my birthday on a date that she has made up, but I prefer Christmas anyway because I get more toys. I am black and white, and very pretty, and met my mummy about three and a half years ago when she dragged me into the house in an unseemly manner. I was a sprightly young kitten then and spent most of my time on the bench of the house next door, but they don't like cats so I eventually came to visit where I now live so they could feed me and give me cuddles. When I first met mum and dad I was very small and had not had much to eat. I had fleas and most of my fur had fallen out because I am allergic to them. When I first came here they made me wear a big pink cat tag with a message in, which I think was for whoever owned me, but it never got looked at and one day the bright young sparks who had been feeding me realised I was pregnant. They still didn't know where I lived but decided that whoever was 'looking after' me was irresponsible and stupid (mummy used a rude word) and stole me. They were very worried because I was very thin and the vet said I was about 8 months old and had already had one litter of kittens, so they locked me in the house. At first I was miserable, locked in and pregnant but I soon realised I could eat as much as I wanted and sleep on the bed. As it was winter I was pleased I wasn't outside and could sleep in the warm. As I got bigger and bigger and bigger, mummy and daddy began to wonder where I was putting all the food. One day daddy went down to London to do some work, so I went upstairs and my waters broke all over the bed. Mummy was frightened, as was I, and it took eight hours before I had my first kitten and 12 hours later I had had three. Mummy called them, Nermal, Mouse and Digby (yes I know - I think she may be a li
ttle odd). When daddy came home he fussed over me and my new babies and as the weeks went by they got bigger and daddy made them a castle from cardboard boxes so they could play. Nermal was about the size of a hamster by this time, who knew he would get up to a stone and a half! We were all very happy together, although mummy was upset when one of the neighbours told her I had already had one litter of kittens outside that had all died. We were all upset again when Digby, the handsomest and most intelligent of my kittens, died aged 1 year and 8 months from a ruptured bowl. The vets said that he may have had this since a kitten and mummy thinks it might be because I was so undernourished when I was pregnant. So although we are all now happy together and my mummy and daddy love me and Nermal and Mouse and even that blooming cat they took in (who, yet again, was pregnant, but only just so she had a special operation) we still miss the kittens I have lost because of an irresponsible owner. I have had to have special tests because I might have got diseases from Tom cats who have mated up with me and I still have very skinny legs (although I now have a big fat belly). So I would ask everyone to have there cats spayed and neutered as not everyone will take cats in; there are too many kittens without homes. Many diseases can be passed on from Tomcats and kittens are in danger from diseases being passed on. Luckily Nermal and Mouse are now big and strong. Please look after your cats. Love poppy xxxx
