Advantages: Reasonably priced, Hamsters love them !
Disadvantages: Bag is not re-sealable
I was shopping at my local Pat Store when I noticed Vitakraft Hamster donuts, so I thought I would treat my hamster to a new treat that he has never had before.
Packaging
These sticks come in a green packet with a picture of a hamster and two donuts on the front. Vitakraft Donuts is written at the top of the packet and fresh and safe is written on the bottom.
On the back of the packet is information such as ingredients, advertisements for other Vitakraft products and a customer comments and care line. Although the packaging is similar to that of a crisp packet, it is actually quite hard to open and I had to use my teeth in the end!
Price
I bought these treats from my local pet store and they cost £1.99 for a packet which contains 4 donuts which is fairly reasonable for hamster treats,
What Are The Treats Made From?
According to the ingredients list, these treats are made from eggs, flour and peas which sounds like a rather odd combination for a donut - but my hamster certainly likes them!
What Do The Donuts Look Like?
The donuts are about 1.5 inches wide and 0.5 inch. The donuts are a light brown, almost beige colour (pretty much the same colour as a bagel) and they have bits of pea throughout the donut.
What Does My Hamster Think Of These Treats?
I popped a treat in my hamster cage while he was asleep with the idea that he would wake up later that evening and enjoy his treat, However, shortly after putting the treat in there, Chilli was up and about looking for this treat (I guess the smell woke him up). One he found the treat, he decided he wanted to try and take it back to his store room (which is actually his wheel) As the treats are fairly large, Chilli had problems trying to take his treat through his tubes. He decided it was going to be easier to sit and hold his donut and nibble on it until he could get it small enough to take back to his lair. I think the taste of the treat got the better of him, as he actually sat and ate the whole donut in one go which is very unusual for my hamster as he is a bit of a hoarder really. These treats certainly seem to have been enjoyed by Chilli as its rare for him to sit and eat the whole treat in one setting.
Range
Vitakraft produce treats for many small animals such as hamster, ferrets, rabbits, birds and probably more. They have a wide range of products they sell for each category of animals. For example, for just hamsters they sell fruit sticks, honey sticks, yogurt drops, chocolate drops just to name a few.
Summary
So far, I would say this is my hamsters favourite treat as it's the only one he has sat down and eaten in one setting rather than storing it and going back to it later. I think £1.99 is a reasonable price to pay considering you get 4 treats in the packet. My only annoyance is that the packet is not resealable to if you want to keep the donuts fresh then you would need to keep them in an air tight container.
Summary: A great treat for your furry friend.
