Advantages: Easy to use, quiet motor.

Disadvantages: None as yet

Getting my little Yorkie, Mollie, to have her fur clipped professionally would be a nighmare, because she goes bananas every time I attempt taking her anywhere in my car - nothing to do with my driving skills, of course.

Her eyes bulge in terror. With mouth agape and tongue curled upwards, she pants as though having just run the marathon. In the end I had to admit that no matter how many times I tried to adjust her to cars, it was not to be, and her health would suffer should I persist.

That was the main reason for me keeping her fur trimmed myself with my trusty pair of scissors.

Whenever I clipped her, she looked as if her coat had been hacked with a pair of garden shears. There was nothing neat or professional looking about my attempts to shorten her locks. So you won't be surprised when I tell you that no one ever asked me who her beautician was. It was pretty clear who had done the deed. Nor wasI ever asked how the 'Chunky-look' was achieved.

Last week I met a friend walking her dog, whilst out with mine on our daily ramble - well stroll really, Mollie dictating the pace as usual when we are all together.

Among other things, we got talking about pet grooming clippers. I remarked that the loud whirring noise of the motor would frighten Mollie and she probably wouldn't stay still long enough for me to use them with any degree of sucess. However, we were invited back for a demonstration of the Wahl Multi Cut Pet Clippers our friend had bought recently from Argos.

I held Mollie while the clippers were switched on and slowly brought towards her.
I was surprised on two counts. The clippers were not as noisy as I had anticipated, emitting a low hum, rather than the buzz of a hundred bees; and Mollie, bless her, was not in the least bit concerned about the large humming beast hovering over, or even touching her coat.

After a short lesson about the clippers, I checked with Argos to see if they were still in stock and yes, there were two ( I wonder why it's only two of anything I want, that are ever in stock at Argos.)

I immediately reserved one and fetched it the following day. The catalogue price was £24.49 but I got mine for £22.04

=====THE WAHL MULTI CUT PET CLIPPER SET=====

It was a mighty impressive package that I purchased for a mere £22.04. The pet grooming equipment and accessories came in a very useful sturdy, black plastic case; inside of which were:

The tough plastic, mains operated clippers
A black plastic blade guard,
Four different sized, plastic attachment combs.
Clipper lubricating oil,
A blade cleaning brush.
Scissors and comb.
An easy to follow instruction DVD ( in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese.)
And finally, a small yet comprehensive instruction booklet - in English.

~~Da- de- da- daaaa~~~Time to give them a try on Mollie for real.

I dutifully read the booklet of instructions before watching the 20 minute DVD, which showed various styles of clipping, for different breeds of dogs; tips about the care of the clippers and how to use them safely etc.

The instructions recommend that dogs be shampooed first, thoroughly dried and groomed before clipping. I skipped the first two and went straight to the grooming bit, to remove any hidden matted or tangle fur.

I placed a towel on the draining board, plugged the clippers into a nearby socket, removed the blade guard and oiled the blades as instructed then attached one of the combs.

Mollie sat quietly on the towel, patiently waiting for me to cut her fur in the usual manner. I switched on the clippers and slowly approached her. She gave me one of those "Oh-no - now what," looks, whilst Moses, who hates buzzing noises, came to investigate before quickly retiring to the sofa.

I was certainly more nervous than Mollie.
At first, I attached the biggest comb so that she wouldn't be scalped, but it made little or no impression at all, Mollies coat is longish but thin. She was happy to let me continue , after twitching once or twice at the beginning, at which point I moved the clippers away for a second or two.

Eventually I found the comb size most suited to her coat, for this time of the year, and was able to give her a reasonably tidy, pain free trim for a change. Mollie was well rewarded with a treat for her good behaviour, so I have no doubt she will happily allow the clippers near her again without flinching.

At this stage of my experience with the clippers, I cannot claim anything near expertise, for there is a certain skill to clipping fur that requires lots of practise and proper tuition, but at least my efforts looks so much neater than my previous attempts with scissors, and the time taken to achieve a reasonable hair cut was greatly reduced.

I am well pleased with my purchase; it's just a matter of practise and time now before someone will surely ask me who clips her hair and how much did it cost - well we can all dream can't we.

Summary: My dog doesn't look like a dogs dinner now
