Advantages: Looks tasty, less messy than tinned food
Disadvantages: Price
My current cat is called Guinness and he is a beast of a cat. Everyone who sees him comments on how big he is, but when you are with him everyday you just don't see it until he is sitting next to another cat outside.
Anyway, when he was a kitten we always fed him tins of Whiskas and he was quite happy with this. One day I received a promotional pack of Whiskas Pouches through the post and gave it to Guinness that night. He absolutely loved it and from that day on he absolutely refused to eat anything else. Tins were out the window and the pouches had to come in or he would have starved to death. It was that obvious how much more he enjoyed the pouches to anything else.
However it didn’t stop there and I soon found out he will not eat any other flavour than the meat pouches in gravy. He hates the fish ones and he hates the meat ones in jelly!!! He's fussier than the kids when it comes to his dinner.
He has been eating these for 7 years now and my review will obviously be about Whiskas Pouches Traditional Meat in Gravy.
The box:
You get 12 pouches in each box for £2.89 in Sainsbury’s. The box is a sturdy cardboard with the familiar purple colouring dominating it. The lid of the box is also cardboard and easily removed by a perforated end. There is a picture of a cure cat looking at you (quite similar to Guinness actually) and the description of which type of food you have chosen. In this case it is Traditional in Gravy. In the box you get 3 pouches each of Beef, Chicken & garden peas, Game and Lamb with carrots. It says on the outside of the box that the recommended quantity of pouches per day per cat would be 4. I can't believe they would suggest this actually. Guinness has one in the morning and one in the evening. If I gave him 4 a day he would the size of a lion by now!!
The pouches inside are individually wrapped in a foil packet. There is an easy tear strip across the top, which you rip off and squeeze out the food. I do find though that on probably 8/10 pouches the strip on the top does not tear off completely and you are left with either squeezing it out with the flap attached or pulling harder to remove it. However I have experienced the meat and gravy kind of spurting out if you pull it too hard. I just leave it on and squeeze round it.
The Smell:
Well to be honest it is pretty gross. As you can imagine the contents are cold and have you ever had a Sunday Roast and not washed up or cleared the plates until much later. It smells pretty rank and this reminds me of the Whiskas pouches. This is no complaint though as whoever expected cat food to smell tasty to a human??
The Look:
Well once you have squeezed it out, there are quite a lot of meat pieces in there. Depending on which sachet you have picked there are also visible pieces of carrot or pea. Along with this is a fair amount of gravy. I think this is good as my cat hardly ever drinks water and I think he gets most of his moisture from his food.
The taste:
You must be joking!!! My cat loves it though.
The nutrients:
It doesn't actually specify what’s in then on the box but it does say Whiskas use high quality, wholesome ingredients that are balanced with all the essential vitamins and nutrients your cat will need. I do tend to believe this, although to be honest if my cat would only eat the cheapest brand of cat food that is what I would give him.
Overall Opinion:
Although the boxes are pricey at £2.89 for 12 pouches I think they are good for the cat and he loves them so really I have no choice!! At £2.89 and with Guinness eating two per day that works out at just under 50p per day to feed him. Not too bad really I guess. Quite often Sainsbury’s will also have them on offer like buy two boxes for £4 and so on which I always stock up on.
Verdict: 8 out of 10 cats prefer it apparently!!
xx
Summary: Tasty looking, wholesome cat food.
