Afghan Hound

Description: The Afghan Hound is a quite old sighthound dog breed. Distinguished by its thick, fine, silky coat and its tail with a ... more
Afghan Hound ... ring curl at the end, the breed acquired its unique features in the cold mountains of Afghanistan, where it was originally used to hunt wolves, foxes, and gazelles. Alternate names for this breed are Balkh Hound, Baluchi Hound, Barutzy Hound and Kabul Hound. The Afghan Hound is tall, standing 24 to 29 inches (63-74 cm) in height and weighing 45 to 60 pounds (20-30 kg). The coat may be any colour, but white markings, particularly on the head, are discouraged; many individuals have a black facial mask. Some are almost white, but particolour hounds (white with islands of red or black) are not acceptable and may indicate impure breeding. The long, fine-textured coat requires considerable care and grooming. The long topknot and the shorter-haired saddle on the back in the mature dog are distinctive features of the Afghan Hound coat. The high hipbones and unique small ring on the end of the tail are also characteristics of the breed.

Fortunately there was a large garden for Zimba to run around in but my brother had to really build the fence up so that the dog didn't escape, this happened a few times and it took a lot of effort to get the dog to come back. Afghans love to run and nothing will deter them once they are on the move. I personally would have given up after the leather sofa became gnawed and the expensive coffee ...more

Premium Review Afghan Hound: Afghans are Proud But Very Stupid So They Say. (448 words)

My brother has an Afghan hound called Zimba, he has had him from a puppy and has been to hell and back training him over the last two years, but I think he has finally cracked it and Zimba is now a well mannered specimen for an Afghan hound. He is a proud and very vain dog but you can't help admire his snooty aloofness, he knows he is gorgeous and walks along with his head held high swishing his tail like a proud dressage horse. The breed is not renowned for its intelligence but after getting to know Zimba I now think that maybe they are not that daft at all. Zimba played the shots all along when it came down to house rules he gave in to some but ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Afghan Hounds - All snobs ! (210 words)

Rating:

My mum has an Afghan Hound called Lady and that describes her and the breed down to a tee. They are very aloof and basically if they don?t want to do something they?re not going to do it. She?s very spiteful and if she can?t have her own way she will be destructive. After to speaking to other owners this is the norm. The grooming of Afghans is a full time job but they look so graceful when they run ? and they can run ? in fact they can outrun most greyhounds and can spot things over a mile away. Once they get going you?ve no chance of getting them back until they are ready. If you are showing Afghans you need to wash them once a week at ...  Read the complete review
