Advantages: A beautiful Dog

Disadvantages: Extremely hard to train

My brother has an Afghan hound called Zimba, he has had him from a puppy and has been to hell and back training him over the last two years, but I think he has finally cracked it and Zimba is now a well mannered specimen for an Afghan hound.

He is a proud and very vain dog but you can't help admire his snooty aloofness, he knows he is gorgeous and walks along with his head held high swishing his tail like a proud dressage horse.

The breed is not renowned for its intelligence but after getting to know Zimba I now think that maybe they are not that daft at all. Zimba played the shots all along when it came down to house rules he gave in to some but not all, but my brother and him now have a great relationship and are the best of pals.

Fortunately there was a large garden for Zimba to run around in but my brother had to really build the fence up so that the dog didn't escape, this happened a few times and it took a lot of effort to get the dog to come back. Afghans love to run and nothing will deter them once they are on the move.

I personally would have given up after the leather sofa became gnawed and the expensive coffee table had legs with huge chunks of wood missing but my brother persisted with this gorgeous animal and now he has a dog that he can be proud of.

He says that he has met many a nice lady while out walking with Zimba, the ladies seem to like the sleek looking hound and always stop for a chat, so there is hope yet for purchasing a wedding hat for my bachelor brothers big day.

The Afghan hound originates from Afghanistan and they were originally bred to hunt mountain lions in packs, they arrived in Britain in the early 1900's but did not become a popular breed until about the 1960's.

These dogs are very tall at least 75cm in height and they need a lot of grooming and bathing at least every six weeks to keep their long coats gleaming but it takes a lot of commitment to see one of these proud and beautiful dogs looking their best.

Zimba is a beautiful dog but I would never take on the commitment of training an Afghan hound they are a very difficult breed to handle so if you ever consider buying one I suggest you talk to another owner first to get some advice.

Summary: Do your home work before you take on this breed.

When I read the title I thought this was a bit racist and then I realised you were writing about dogs (lol)
