These vary dramatically in size, coat type and abilities. The dog is the only known domesticated species which existed before the fifteenth century. The fact that the dog is thought to have survived through thousands of years and has many relatives, both distant and close makes it hard to distinguish exactly when domestication occurred, and it is oft...more

Crowned Review Animal Welfare in general: SMELLY? COSTLY? INCONVIENIENT? DO YOU STILL WANT ONE? (4068 words)

Cats – lovely cute fluffy things that purr and rub up against you with obvious affection? Or nasty smelly, flea ridden noisy murders who only want you around when they want something? Your views on cats may well fall under both these at some time or other – as the owner of 3 cats I know my opinion does! For as long as I can remember there have always been cats in my home and if I have my way there always will. I heard a story the other day about a woman, who had 2 kittens for 2 weeks, then left them outside an RSPCA shop in a box as she couldn’t cope! I managed (just about) to keep a civil tongue in my head whilst telling her just how ...

Except one problem the person who was fortunate to get this gift wanted a Yorkshire Terrier and hastily abandoned the pup, the puppy was four weeks old. It came into the rescue ...

Premium Review Animal Welfare in general: My Animal Story: animals - you gotta love 'em! (2616 words)

I must confess. I am one of the world’s biggest animal lovers. I’ve always been this way; I can’t explain how or why it came about. Genetics don’t seem to have played any part of the game. So maybe this leads to the nature or nurture argument? Nope, I can honestly stand here and disprove that theory too. You see I wasn’t brought up to adore animals. In fact I had (and still have usually) an extremely tough job trying to persuade my parents to let me have a new pet. I don’t know why they’re so against the idea really. I’ve always looked after my pets. And that is fairly rare usually because, lets ...
