Advantages: So well organised

Disadvantages: The flying queens

This might sound very sad to some people but there is nothing I like better than sitting in my garden on a summers day and watching the ants go about their business. I find them absolutely fascinating and actually sit for hours watching and interfering a little. I like to lay bits of food on the ground for them to gather up and wonder off with and although I hate it when their nests get upset, I was a little delighted when I realised Noah had stood on one a couple of months a go.

Ants live in colonies which can range from just a few ants to hundreds. They have a very organised manner and like us humans there is a heirachy from way up the top which are the queens to way down the scale to the mere soilders. Each have a job to do and they do it well.

I love not only the fact that ants are so tiny but work so well together but also that they can carry another ant for miles and miles without tiring. On many occasions I have watched a fellow ant carrying a dead carcuss from one spot to the other and not once do they stop. The only reason they will put the carcuss down is if they come into contact with an obstacle and they need to figure out a way to overcome it. I don't know that I would beable to manage a human body on my back over every terrain.

I really enjoy the fact that ants are so territorial. If you upset the nest then they come out in their swarms and defend, defend, defend. It's quite funny in way because if I wanted to I could just stand on all of them and wipe them out completely but they don't care, they will do anything to defend their home.

The only downside to Ants are when we are hoarded by the flying ones once a year. They seem to get everywhere and I hate them flapping around my face and biting me on the odd occasions.

All in all ants are amazing creatures that will always amaze me and I will ever tire of watching them.

Summary: I love them!

When I was little I used to fill a bin lid with water, so only the handle was above water, and used to line up a red ant on one side of the handle which runs across the bin, and a black ant on the other. The ensuing fights were brilliant. lol.
