ABOUT THE BORDER COLLIE
Border collies are often described as the most intelligent dog and i have to say that i would agree.
They are extremely energetic, have great stamina, are very loyal and obedient.
Border collies are commonly used as herding dogs on farms, as part of search and rescue teams and companion dogs.
The natural lifespan of a border collie is between 10 and 17 years.
Border collies are a medium sized dog usually 48-56 cm tall that comes in a variety of colors the main one being black and white though they also come in red and white, tricolor, merle and occasionally all one color.
They have a double coat a smooth outer coat and a thick fleecy undercoat and generally either light or dark brown eyes though occasionally blue, usually with the merle coloring.
Border collies are massively active in both body and mind and require a considerable amount of exercise and mental stimulation.
The breed has an instinctive desire to work closely and intensely with humans , true to their working backgrounds.
Collies can make demanding pets who need almost constant stimulation they are well known to be good at flyball, agility, chasing a ball or Frisbee and will do this all day long if you have the energy to keep up.
They are however probably one of the most loyal dogs you could wish to meet.
Border collies descend from droving and gathering breeds mostly from the Scottish /England and English/Welsh borders including the Cumberland sheepdog. First mention of the 'collie' or 'colley' type dog fist appeared at the end of the 19th century.
ME AND MY COLLIE
I Had the opportunity just over 13 years ago to rescue a Border collie who had for the first year of his life been chained up in a back garden and vary rarely taken for a walk.
I grabbed this opportunity with both hands and brought him home. Only after vet checks, injections and taking him out did we realize the affects of this (i can only describe it as) cruelty had had on him. He had lots of issues he was petrified of men, other dogs, walking sticks, zimmer frames sudden movements to name just a few, also he was not house trained.
It took us 2 years of patience, love, understanding and reward based training to iron out most of his problems before i became pregnant with my first child. We were worried as he had not been exposed to very many small children though he had learned to adore older ones.
We had no need to worry as he became the perfect family pet who absolutely adored our first and second children both who he taught to walk by letting them hold on.
Don't get me wrong in the first couple of years we had a whole host of problems including boredom on his part at which time he decided to do some housework in the form of tearing up an entire sofa. A big lesson learned on our part to keep him active and give him plenty of jobs to do.
I could not have wished for a more lovable, loyal, protective friend who sadly passed away aged 14 on the 6th of January this year.
Overall i would recommend a border collie undoubtedly to anyone who has enough time, energy and love to give what this dogs need.
However i cannot stress enough do not get one of these dogs if you are not willing to do at least 3 hours of running around a day minimum. They are highly intelligent and need this simulation and it breaks my heart to see so many of these adorable pets in rescues from no fault of their own.
Summary: Recommend the breed to only people with enough time and energy.
