Advantages: loving, fun to be with, caring
Disadvantages: likes long walks
In 1873 the first sheepdog trials were held. A training course was devised to test the skill of the Border Collie. In 1906 the International Sheep Dog Society was formed and written records were instituted. In 1976 the first border collie was show and recognised by the Kennel Club. In 1997 I was born and my name is Pudsey the puppy even though I am 6 years old. I am a black and white border collie with freckles. I am also very cute. Selecting your dog ------------------ Now before you decided that you would like to purchase a Border Collie, you have to take into consideration several things. 1) Have I got the time to take him out for walks every day as they love walking. Our will run and run and run and come home and go to sleep for a while and would quite happily go back outside again for another walk. 2) Does the dog fit into my lifestyle. If you work all day and the dog is left on its own, please do not buy a Border Collie like me as I get very bored easily and I love the company of humans. My breed has been known to chew through walls and carpets and anything that I think is amusing, although you will not be amused when you come home. Now my mum is going back to full time work soon and there will be no one with us for two whole days... Great I thought we will be on the rampage causing chaos. Then she came home today and told dad, she has got a friend who we know to come and petsit while she works. 3) Do you want to show him or is he going to be a household pet. This does make a lot of difference as mum shows me but she gave up after I was very naughty one day. I was in the show ring and I was selected for the final two rounds and it was between me and an alsation. I did not like been shown and I decided it was time to prove this to her. We were walking around the ring when I saw an agility class and I started to run very fast. Mum was not amused as she knew I could win this easy but she knew I was not happy so we
decided I would be put into agility rather than just been shown. Also if you want to show your dog professionally I would suggest getting a KC reg dog. I am a farm collie from a stock of hard working parents. 4) In looking for a puppy, ask the owner about the parents health and make sure they and the puppy is in good health. If you want to breed from a pup again it is advised to see the puppys parents and ask the owner has there been any problems with litters. Types of Border Collies ----------------------- Shorthaired or long haired Black and White Tri colour Red Merle Blue Merle I am a Black and white collie and I have 10 freckles on my nose and a few on my legs. My brother Caffery has got beige on him and has beige eyebrows, cute eh! My daughter is so cute, she is predominantly black with white on her. Breeding -------- First of all you must not breed the two coloured merles as this can cause all sorts of complications and health issues. Always breed a merle with a tri colour or a black and white border collie. Walking/Exercise ---------------- I am a fun and active dog and I love going out in the car and into the countryside and running and running feeling the wind in my hair, whoops I mean fur lol. I can out walk humans any day of the week and sometimes I have come home gone to sleep for a wee while and I am ready to and play or go for another walk. When mum is not bad she will take me to the park but I have to wear a muzzle as I am prone to nipping. Be careful if you have children, whilst I am friendly and loving, I have a herding instinct. When I was about 8 months old mum was at her friends and it was a birthday party. The children were screaming at the bottom of the garden.. I was not harming them, I was playing but if they moved out of my circle they got a quick nip. Mum and her friends were laughing and they had to rescue the children. I love children, I will p
lay with them all day as they amuse me and I would not hurt them in any way. Training -------- I am very active and a bit boisterous and my mum sent me to puppy training classes, you can normally get a number from your local vets. Classes can be anything from a couple of pounds upwards. Why send me there? Well I need to learn who is master and how to walk properly and when to be praised and when not! I hate it when mum tells me I have been a bad boy as I am very eager to please. My ears go back and I sulk and my puppy eyes just stare at her. Toilet training was quite easy with me, first of all I saw the cats use this litter tray and I did what they did but as I got older mum put newspaper down on the floor and day by day moved it to the back door and then every morning she would take me out in the garden and tell me to wee. I became very housetrained very quickly. I was never allowed to play with slippers as mum said If I chewed an old slipper I would chew the new ones, so I was told no! If you are going to breed from a border collie, it is best to do this during the second to third season when the bitch is at her best. Sleeping Arrangements ---------------------- A lot of people have indoor cages/kennels or let their pets sleep in the kitchen. Me I sleep on my mums bed at the bottom, ok so a lot of you might think ewwwww but its really comfy but in the middle of the night I usually go and sleep on the floor at the side of her bed. If your pet is to sleep elsewhere, make sure it has a comftable bed and drink and food nearby with toys. Intelligent ----------- I am very intelligent and a quick learner. One of my favourite tricks is for mum to tidy all my toys up in the garden and then I go and take them all out of the box again. I am easy to train, I fetch mum her post every morning, normally with a few teeth marks on it. I was scolded the other week as mum left
some liver on the side for tea, when she went there it had gone and it was inside my tummy ;0) I managed to jump up on the side and on my back feet I pulled the dish over with my paw. I also do this with the cats food when shes not looking. Compatibility ------------- I am a fun loving dog and love people and children and other pets. My best friend is Devil cat, we grew up together and we sleep together. Home ---- Now I can adapt to most situations, I have lived in a flat with no garden but did not like it. My favourite is our new house as it has massive gardens. General Care ------------ Brush me regulary otherwise I will get knots in my fur. I am long haired and there is a lot of fur flying around our house at the moment. Do not forget to worm me and take me to the vets for a check over and use frontline for fleas. I hate the stuff and roll over on the bed when she puts it on me but it does work. Do not forget my innoculations as mum forgot about them one year and I got kennel cough. Travelling ---------- I love travelling in a car but I have warned you that I am a clever dog. Mum bought a guard for the car but we learnt how to move the bars. I would advise a cage for the car or safety belts if your going to have me on the back seat. Mum was not impressed this particular day as we scratched the side panels of the car and it cost her £400 to have them replaced. Most of all I am lovely breed and a very faithful companion in the right hands.. Must go now I can smell food downstairs, She is cooking liver, my favourite, time to go and look cute at her. Pudsey the Border Collie.
