Advantages: very loving, obedient if you put the training and effort in, excellent dogs

Disadvantages: need alot of love and care, walking even in the rain, can get up to mischief if not given enough to occupy them

I was found years ago by a brown and white collie, and have been blessed by hair all over my sofa, in my cups of tea and chewed socks ever since ( we later named him jasper as he seemed to love this squeeky carrot toy we had got him even at 02.00 when he decided that he was awake and why weren't we). As we were coming home along a busy road at rush hour on a friday evening this typical collie decided that he needed a closer look at his future car and attempted to round this huge chunk of metal up that luckly that day we managed to stop on a sixpence and didn't cause any harm to the future male in my life. This is really how our story begins with myself standing in the middle of this busy road trying to coerce this collie into coming to say hello to me instead of trying to round any more cars up. now i have had rescue dogs all my life but never a collie i was used to setters and retrievers calm dogs!!! that didn't chase traffic. and besides i didn't have room in my life for a dog let alone one that was a scruffy and unkempt as this one was. I am not a violent person but one look at this dog would make any dog lover see red. He had cigarette burns all over, cuts over his ears and muck that made him look like he was a black and brown dog instead of tan and white. now where we lived at the time the local ruling was that stray dogs were put down after a week. Now yes i am a sucker and one look in those big brown eyes and i was sunk and after numerous phone calls to my flatmate, the rescue center and the dog warden eventually we decided that he would have me and that this wet nose that needed much love attention and a good bath!! came home after 7 days.
Now bless her, my flatmate at the time had never had a dog let alone a collie much less one that wasn't house trainned and very very scared of the world and still to this day petrified of the hoover which anyone that has a dog knows is a vital appliance to have. so eventually we settled in <
br>to a routine where if i worked more than 2 nights regardless of my flatmate 'babysitting' i would come home to my dirty laundry in a lovely pile in the front room, never my clothes you understand just my knickers and socks which my flatmate found very interesting as they weren't there when she had gone to bed and yet there when i got home. Well prospective dads came and went and none seemed to take jasper's interest it was most amusing to see this young collie turning his nose up and walking away from the other men in my life as if he had a bad smell under his nose, and wow betide any one who tried to upset his routine of sleeping next to my side of the bed he would sulk for days or just sigh very loudly. then a new man came on the scene (my husband) and this man was wonderful, when we met up with him it ment we were going for a walk. or at least a trip in the car where he could try and catch some more cars!!!
We are now 3 years down the track and this scrap of a dog has turned into a very loving an affectionate dog that drives us nuts with his incesent need to fetch us a ball, or even just a small piece of rubber for us to throw.
I am now unloved by jasper and am only good for food, cuddles, when he is poorly and getting dragged out of bed at 3am when he needs to check that the garden is still there.
so remeber other collie owners they are fickle! and do anything for that soggy tennis ball,
even fetch it back constantly but if you have the time and energy are most rewarding.
We are currently in the middle of obedience classes so that we can ultimately progress on to Fly ball. yes more tennis balls !!!!

If you are thinking of getting a collie or any type of dog do have a long hard look at your life style and whether you are able to give them the love and time that they need. yes they are cute little bundles of fluff but they do grow up very quickly and can be very destructive if they get too bored or undisciplined.
so please have a long hard look and do alot of research first.

I've never had a dog, but a friend of the family has three dogs, they're all mental collies. They're nice, but it's good to get away from them sometimes!
