Advantages: Loyal, spirited, full of character, playful, intelligent, love people

Disadvantages: All that slobber!

Until my family bought Winston (Brindle Pedigree) two and a half years ago, I had no experience of boxers at all. I can now say with total confidence that they are the best companion you could ever wish for. They are very strong willed dogs but, when adequately trained, will always follow your commands. The boxer is a playful dog and always up for a game of tug-of-war with whichever domestic item takes its fancy. Winston is also a keen gardener, much to our dismay, and still occasionally digs up the flowerbed even though he's no longer a puppy. One thing boxers are renowned for is the gallons of slobber they produce. As soon as they smell food or have a run around, their mouths drip with slime, which they usually take upon themselves to distribute all over the living room walls and sofa with a good shake! They are very energetic dogs and expect their walks every day on time and start moaning if they are not taken out. They are not too expensive to keep and require no more feeding than most medium sized dogs - although they'd be more than happy to accept it! They are very loyal and would be willing to die for their owner(s) and make very good guard dogs for the home. What I find to be the most amazing thing about boxers, however, is their intelligence. Winston knows what many words mean that we have not purposely taught him the meaning of. I have trained him to sit, give his paw etc. and have taught him the relevant commands for these but he also knows what many other words mean, such as 'collar', through hearing it being said in conversation. I once asked him to get his collar and he darted straight into the hall, picked it up and came trotting back to me with it hanging from his mouth, yet I'd never trained him to do this. They can seem like idiots at times but they are very clever and can sense different tones in people's voices. If you shout at them, they will sense the angry tone in your voice and realise they are in trouble. Likewise, th
ey know when they are in the good books. Boxers love to be around people and will follow you if you leave them in a room on their own. They are very good company and have the best spirit and character of any breed of dog I know of.

I would reccomend buying a boxer to every prospective dog buyer. The only people boxers may not be suitable for is people without the time and energy to look after them and those who find playful dogs a bit of a handful. Don't get me wrong, boxers are not difficult to look after and aren't hyperactive in any way, it's just that they like a lot of exercise and someone to play with. This is why they are such an ideal family dog and very loyal companions.

Excellent opinion, on a mad but loveable breed. Well done for warning people about the liveliness and slobber.
