My Boxer Bitch Becky died last May at the grand old age of 13. She was a beautiful Red with appealing eyes that could melt the heart of anyone. I had bought her home at the age of 6 weeks and she had remained by my side sharing most of the bed and the egg custards for her entire life.
She was my best friend and knew all my secrets.

I have now plucked up the courage to get another Boxer. As any Boxer owner will tell you once you have had a Boxer you are hooked and no other Breed comes into the equation!

I looked in dismay at the prices of puppies. Understandably a not so cheap breed to buy. After all, caring breeders will want the best homes for their puppies. The last thing they wish to see is the dog being mistreated by people who do not understand the breed or took no notice on the leaflet on how to look after him.

Unfortunately this is what is happening. Money to some people is nothing. They decide that they want a Boxer for the "look good factor" and regardless of the fact they work 40 hours a week and the dog will remain at home alone does not come into their decision to buy a playful dog.
Instead they get home with their new puppy, love and cuddle it briefly, then go to work leaving him to howl, chew the sofa, destroy the kitchen or redecorate the lounge carpet etc. Of course he deserves a beating doesn’t he? Being left alone all day with no one to share his sorrow. After all its his fault he was left alone. His fault they didn’t think about the consequences.

I have recently spent two weeks helping out at a Boxer rescue centre. The sights that greeted me were not of happy dogs. These were dogs that had been beaten neglected denied food and bedding. Denied Love.
They were the lucky ones that made it to the centre for a chance of a new loving home. A home that understands the breed.
The not so lucky ones are in the kennel in the sky.

Please, please, please consider, take time and
really look into the breed before you spend your £400 on a cute little puppy.
Boxers are intelligent they need love and exercise. They are playful dogs that give their love to who loves them back.
They won’t think twice of tearing the house apart if they are left for long periods of time. And in case you’re wondering about putting him in a cage for 8 hours, How would you feel?
There are no such things as bad dogs. Only people with bad knowledge.

If you cannot give your time, save your money and spend it on a cyberpet.

a well written and totally true picture of the boxer - i love my two to bits - but i can believe any one could ever be cruel to them - it annoyed me to read that there is such a place as a boxer rescue centre - how can anyone be so cruel to the most loving dog ever

Excellent opinion, condolences for the loss of Becky, and I hope you have as many years with your newest addition. Best wishes G.
