I'm not budging on my opinion (Budgie)

Advantages: when they fly around

Disadvantages: boring!

We had a green budgie called Blue. He was named after the old man in the comedy 'Old School'. I didn't like that budgie, and here's why:

1) He was boring - he wouldn't train, wouldn't come to us or copy our whistling - boring!

2) He looked ugly- yes his feathers were nice, but he was all boney and skeletal and I just didn't like that. And his little hard beak was like a claw, not to mention his claws!

3) He wouldn't shut up. Even with a blanket over his cage at night he would wake us up at 5am some days. I nearly put that blanket over his head!

4) Birds are meant to fly, and they shouldn't be kept in a cage. We let Blue out quite a bit but still, why lock up something and prevent it from being able to do one of the only things it can do really well? I suppose the same can be said for a lot of animals, but with birds I think it's even more important.

Anyway, here's a few things I would recommend:

1) Get lots of toys and treats for the cage - mirrors, cuttlefish and the like will keep the birdy happy which is important else it won't shut up.

2) Buy sandpaper for it to scratch its claws on to trim them. This will reduce the chance of it cutting you.

3) Let it fly around the house - this is the only fun part, and I liked this bit a lot, seeing where it would land and the like, but be aware of flying poo, and don't forget it's out and open the door/window.

4) Change them regularly - their waste can contain dangerous germs so clean them out a lot.

5) Put grit in their food - this helps their digestive system, and is an often overlooked area.


All in all, not the pet for me, but it kept the wife happy and if you fancy one make sure you follow my tips!
