*EDIT* Additional information to this review has now been added, with a great pet food recommendation that helped heal George's minor skin irritation....
We have just took charge of our 9 week old Bully, & what a surprise! Even after extensive research we were not fully prepared for his high energy levels & his obsession for chewing!
I would advise anyone thinking about getting one to do your research, read, visit the dogs in show & get prepared! Metal feeding bowls, plenty of treats, good quality toys, such as the Kong Wubber, Vet bed, & crate are essential items. Also, research toxic plants on the net, as a Bully pup will want to taste every plant in your garden!
Although not for the faint hearted, Bully's are fantastic companions. They are loving, funny, clever, childlike & great with children. They hate being on their own so full time workers would not make suitable owners. What you put into these dogs will be rewarded ten fold. Must dash, his teeth are sank into my new kitchen!
*EDIT* George is now 5 months old. He still loves to chew, & is very excitable, but he is a brilliant dog. He has been bitten by two dogs which were totally unprovoked, whilst he was on the lead. One of the dogs was a black Lab, which was on a long lead, the other a Jack Russell which wasn't on a lead. A Collie that wasn't on a lead had also attempted to bite him, but for all its aggression, George did not react. In fact, he has never showed any signs of aggression what so ever. He is such a loving dog, who despite some bad experiences still loves to play with other dogs. The key is to keep them socialised. George has two doggy friends, belonging to our neighbour & friends. One is a very energetic Cockerpoo, the other a laid back, yet dominating British Bulldog. Despite their different characters, George loves to play. He nips a bit still (but never aggressively), as he is still just a pup & teething so we do try to gage the reactions of other dogs carefully & monitor any play sessions, but he is fantastic.
He still sleeps in a crate, as he can't be trusted whilst unsupervised not to demolish the house, but he likes his bed. Also, another thing to consider is the skin issues white Bullies can have. George had a slight rash on his tummy, so we gradually changed his food. He is now on an excellent diet. He has an on-line food called Trophy. They have a wide variety of products available & their web site is definitely worth a look. www.trophypetfoods.co.uk. Their obvious concern & interest of your pet is great. The man came round to deliver the food & met George. He told me exactly how much food he will need given his weight (which at 2 stonnes, is big for his age but not over weight) & advised us on what products to give him for his rash. George loves the fish treats that were recommended & needless to say his minor skin irritation has since cleared up. I am sorry for the advertisement, but I can't stress enough how impressed we are with this company! & we love GEORGE. People on line have written bad reports, but every dog has the ability to be nasty, despite its breed. This could be down to the breeding, or ownership. It is not usually breed specific, & people should be mindful of that before writing defamatory comments. We chose this breed because on many searches across the web, the one dog that through the opinions of experts that was given great reviews as compared to all the others was the Bull Terrier. I must also add, that this breed really does give you pride of ownership. George is like a celebrity in the village we live, & I have not had one single bad comment from anyone who has taken the time to meet him, stroke him & ask questions. I have asked permission from other dubious dog owners to let George sniff their placid dogs, & this has been a great success & helped change some peoples perception of the breed. They deserve the admiration & respect of other dog lovers, & I will continue to spread the word!
Summary: Great family dog but not just for christmas!
